Post your covers! (2019-2022)

So this is me at the two year point. Never played bass before. Took @JoshFossgreen’s amazing Beginner to Baddass course then got my head down and put in the miles.

It’s been fun. At no time did I ever come home and not want to practice. So much so that I’ve easily done over a 1000 hours on the bass (mainly my Fender P Bass).

To date this is my 33rd cover and at the risk of repeating myself. Hands down the best thing for my playing has been learning and recording songs. Pretty much all the online teachers say the same thing, that building up your repertoire improves your playing.

Interesting back story to this song for all you Fleetwood Mac fans. Stretch were a 1970s British rock band that grew from the collaboration between Elmer Gantry and Kirby Gregory.
The band was put together in 1974 with help from Fleetwood Mac manager Clifford Davis and drummer Mick Fleetwood, to perform as Fleetwood Mac on a US tour because the existing Fleetwood Mac were not in a position to fulfill outstanding contractual obligations. However, Fleetwood did not join the tour as planned, and later denied any knowledge or involvement, and partway through the tour it became obvious to audiences that there was no original member of Fleetwood Mac in the band, and the tour collapsed. Bass player Paul Martinez claimed, “Mick Fleetwood pulled out at the last minute claiming not to know who we were!”

Stretch rose from the ashes of this debacle, and soon had a No. 16 hit single in November 1975 with “Why Did You Do It?”, the lyric of which was a direct attack on Mick Fleetwood for his failure to join the band on the ill-fated US tour.

I managed to get Moises to work for me on this track and it completely stripped out all the original bass from the recording. 20 years ago punters like us wouldn’t have been let anywhere near this technology.

Cheers Amigos

As always, it’s the support and encouragement of seeing other beginners on this thread giving it a go that helped spur me into recording myself.

Love it @Vegaswizzle! Sounds great, very cool close-ups on the fingerwork too. Tricky rhythms for sure, the way you gotta dance around the beats and those sweet jazzy runs, so nice.

That’s the best, when you reach for something and eventually get there, great job!

Some food for thought from Venus Theory. Relevant to this topic so I’ll post it here.

This hits home for me for two reasons. The first is that all of my favorite covers by other artists sound very very different than the originals. They definitely bring the covering artists’ own feel and groove into the cover.

The second is I spend way, way too much time obsessing over this in my own cover material. It’s by far the most challenging part of a cover for me - getting the actual sounds and timbres right for all the instruments. I need to just relax on that and lean in to what I really like about other people’s covers - that it brings some of their special sauce into the original.

Ooo nice job @Barney ! Yes it is amazing the tools we have available these days - still takes talent to use them properly though

Thanks everyone for the kind words, that was a lot of fun to learn and get down. A great day yesterday of Bass and skiing with the dog, just perfect. So in order to balance things out, the universe has decided that this morning I wake up feeling crappy and tested positive for Covid, Yay!
I’m surprised I lasted this long (1054 days). I’m going to see if there’s some sort of hide and seek prize, I can claim from the BC government. I’d be happy with a framed certificate at this point to be honest.

Cheers

congrats ! :joy:

I’ve never been tested positive to Covid so far, even if I most probably already had it without symptoms, because a lot of close friends had it.

Bummer Barney.
I still have not had COVID, and I have tested many times.
It’s possible I had it without knowing, but I find it is like a tree in the woods, are you really infected with COVID if you are 100% asymptomatic?

I am going with no, cuz the tree in the woods is still standing and silent as far as I as it concerns me,
damn it!!! :rofl::rofl::rofl:

I rolled a long time with the “I probably had it without knowing” thing, until I actually got it and my body was like “LMAO spoiler: you didn’t”.

Super sympathies @Barney, enjoy bingeing Youtube for a week and here’s to no lingering symptoms.
