Post your covers! (2023)

Surprise… I did a cover of a Cure song. I find it funny that I will work hard to learn a song to cover, I’ll work on it for weeks and weeks and then never record it. And then on the other hand, I’ll get a crazy urge to do a song and I’ll record it in a day or two. This is one of the latter.

I really wish I had recorded a clean tone and mixed it with the distorted tone and I had even thought that like an hour before I recorded, then I forgot. And I’m not one to set everything back up to record again so I just chalk that up to a learning experience.

Does this mean you did you not like the distortion tone level as you recorded it?

Thanks for checking it out John.

I discovered I could add photos to my notes in GarageBand, so I took photos of all the settings! Finally some good notes!

As for the intro, I understand your criticism. I went back through many of my unused tracks and found that I never really nailed that part so I must have baked it in wrong. I have about 36 un-used tracks in this file.

I would like to nail these songs in one take, but I do think that becomes un-realistic sometimes. I would even say demotivating when you’ve made dozens of attempts at it. (maybe that’s just me)

I think my Blu de Tiger cover required over 75 attempts and with all the slides, my finger was raw for a day or two afterwards. I really wanted that one perfect take, and I suffered for trying to persevere for hours. (I also did all that in a single day, which was foolish - I’ve since learned to space things out.)

Anyways, I mostly agree with your philosophy here. I’m using this challenge as a way to keep playing bass (and hopefully improving) until I start to consider some more advanced things.

Thanks again.

I almost forgot there was a bass player on the left side of the screen as I spent the entire first minute watching the kitty! That said, I really enjoyed the playing! Is that a lefty bass?

Congrats on your first year of bass playing. Awesome to see you upping your production skills as well!

Love the distorted tone here! Is that one of the Squier Gold basses?

I can certainly understand the urges to do random covers! I’ve got a short list of songs that are outside the 50 Songs list that I want to tangent off to do…

Great cover! Thanks for sharing!

This is one of the reasons I haven’t recorded this yet, for me, this is a really hard song. Don’t get me wrong, you did GREAT!

One take is a long lost thing for me.
Instead I look for getting really really close, and, if I have to clean up 1-4 small things, I will, otherwise, I will keep at it, or, put it on the shelf. This one has been on the shelf so long its dusty, lolol.

NICE GROWL in that tone @g13dip
Excellent playing as usual.
Great poster and cat.

I don’t know a lot of Cure songs, certainly not as many as you, but I really like your tone.
Maybe a bit to high in the mix, but other than that I dug it.
Makes them sound a bit harder hitting (I really only know the Friday I’m In Love song, lol).

I think your next GAS purchase needs to be a stage light package!!!

well done as always man!

It’s not that I don’t like the tone I ended up with, it’s just not what I had in mind. I should have put more time into pre-production instead of thinking everything will happen magically in post.

Yes. 40th Anniversary Gold Edition in Ruby Red.

thank you!

haha! I should get my sons guitar lessons so I can have a band to play with
And thanks for the kind and encouraging words.

Some time to catch up on the covers thread…

Great one again @cheeze_pizza , excellent tone on this.

@g13dip Very well done and Happy Bassiversary!

@Paul_9207 Awesome cover and video!

Of course it is @cheeze_pizza, all good basses are (its my JV MIJ 1983 Fender P, and I love it)

thanks @John_E I am super happy with my tone through my new pedals…still more tweaking to go, but I love playing even more now
the poster is a blow up onto canvas of this print I made

Ah ok, thats interesting, when listening I thought it was a cool tone (very ‘meaty’) but the distortion level was just a touch too high…would be good to hear what you wanted for tone, but agree its not worth a redo

Yes! Another one takes a step down the path of realizing that it’s better to record clean and do everything in software

(It really is, from a production standpoint. Like, a lot. At minimum I recommend also recording a clean track regardless of what else you do).

Yes, this is why you record clean. You then have infinite flexibility with tone when mixing.

Nope! At least not for me. Just record clean and do everything in mixing and mastering. It’s a much easier workflow IMO.

Another option is to just record a clean channel. Most audio interfaces have two inputs. If you like, you can get a preamp with a DI out and put it early in your chain and record the DI off of it clean while also recording the wet effected track.

This is my plan moving forward. The only reason I dig my heels in with using my pedalboard at all is because I still have dreams of playing in a live band in front of real people some day. Which still doesn’t make total sense.

100% agree @howard that recording clean is the most flexible way to go
but as someone going the other way (having just recreated my standard bass channel strip from my DAW in analog pedal form) there is alot to be said for the fun (and learning) from tweaking boxes and hearing your sound coming out ‘wet’ as you are practicing/playing, something I couldn’t easily do before, but now is just what happens as soon as I turn on

I like your early DI off for clean track recording suggestion alot (best of both worlds), sadly while I have 3 additional DI outs in my chain they are all near the end, so I will have to think about that one for me

That sounded really good, you’re getting some nice tones out of your setup. I couldn’t get all the timing intricacies on this one when I did it, will come back to it later again for sure. Oh and most importantly, how did I miss the cheeze_pizza font change last time, I’m slippin

Nice way to cap the year! Here’s to many more good ones to come. I haven’t heard that NOFX song for a long time, it was great to hear it again.

You clearly know your audience here

Very cool! I take it this is a deep cut? Pretty much only know what was on “Standing On a Beach” and “Galore”.

Haha, yup I have a list of songs like that I never posted, but you gotta follow that inspiration when it strikes!

A day off (almost). Clean up the workshop, wrap up some invoicing / paperwork and finally get to play some bass for the first time in weeks.

I’m living bass vicariously through this thread and it doesn’t disappoint.

@cheeze_pizza that tone sounded killer. If I was going to buy another bass then the Jino would be high up on the list, it looks awesome.

@g13dip first off congratulations on your first year of bass. Unsurprising statistics on how many people quit in the first year (spoiler alert it’s really high). So for just 12 months of playing, that’s a solid cover :pineapple: :pineapple: :pineapple:

Lastly @Paul_9207 a Cure song that I’ve never heard before but I really enjoyed. I liked the distorted tone. I like you I am hanging on to a thin thread that at some point I’ll be able to play with real people on a regular basis. Anyway I enjoyed it.

My older brother had the cassette, it’s the same album that has Inbetween Days, Push, and Close to Me. So it’s been in steady rotation for me since I was a little kid. And a fun fact, my dad hated that song, like really hated it and none of us really know why for sure.

Thanks dude! I still feel like I don’t quite understand the settings for the Cali76 pedal but we’re slowly getting there!

This font has a nice pizza shop/menu aesthetic so I’m gonna roll with it for a while.

It’s becoming my favorite to play! It’s a bit of a heavy sucker for sure! However, the chunky neck feels better in my hand versus any of my other basses. I’m also becoming very accustomed to the vintage fingerboard radius. Thanks for the kind words man!
