This is actually a rare photo of DH World Champ Tara Llanes and Jared Rando, I did the clinic at Aliso canyon we did Rock-It. Sadly Tara had a serious accident at the World Cup and was paralyzed from the waist down shortly after this…

That’s a bummer. I don’t like to do anything crazy anymore. I usually try to keep both tires on the dirt at all times.

My mental approach changed when I found out I’m going to be a dad. I’m more cautious and stopped taking challenging lines which didn’t help much actually I worked twice harder instead of flowing and I started riding with a full on D3O armor :joy:

Hello, it’s been a minute. New job, sick dog etc. I made the move away from the Helix HX Stomp about 3 months ago and tried just using the new Ampeg SGT-DI pre amp. I also added the Cali 76 compressor. It sits on a pedal board that lives on my desktop (unless I’m playing out, when it’s small enough to sit on top of the amp).

No menu diving, just turning physical knobs. I obviously can’t get the range of sounds as the Helix but what I do get from it, I like. I spend more time practicing and less time menu diving.

Thought I’d pick out a simple tune to demo the SGT. It’s a regular preamp but with the option of turning on a drive channel of either the classic SVT or in this case I chose the B15.

Great cover @Barney ! How do you run the output from the ampeg to the Scarlett? From the headphone socket?

Thanks boys. Yes @Ed you have a few options with the SGT. DI out and 1/4” headphone out give you all the preamp plus cab sim stuff and aux signal or the or the preamp 1/4” out which doesn’t include the aux in and cab sim info.

I use headphone 1/4” out to 1/4” instrument in on the Scarlet Solo.

You should try running the DI (set to pre) out to your other input to get a clean bass track as well, and the.n play with mixing it in to your effected track :slight_smile:

Awesome @Barney you are insane with the guitar the whole time making it so powerful. The notes value is just spot on if it’s too long it would drag the song. This is good stuff man.

Here is another cover from a studio practice evening with my brother. We played Play That Funky Music to a drum and vocal track.

I make some mistakes, but I had only tried playing this for the first time the night before. We also may have already had a few beers at this point! Also had no idea the track was going to end the way it did!

This is another song I’m playing at my next show.

Played through an Ashdown 4x10. Tone knob at around 40 percent.

So cool you have your brother to play with and guide you.
You don’t know how lucky you are to have him as an asset, including the goofy dancing.

So, the thing about mistakes when playing with others and getting closer to a ‘live’ setting - - - no one notices, and we notice less too. It is some sort of magical thing that happens the closer you get to live. I was just reaing about this phenomena in David Byrne’s book “How Music Works”. Our brains weave what we expect to hear much better than in an isolated recording, so when we are doing covers here and everyone is looking at us and nothing else, and we are playing to a fully recorded track, mistakes pop. Not so much live, or here, even with the addition of just one other live instrument and a live setting recording.

So don’t worry about the mistakes, you sounded fantastic - keep going, you are zooming man.

Some of the most valuable advice ever given to me by a band teacher. If you screw up, just keep playing, they won’t notice. If you stop or make a face, they will.

Also related to this, band etiquette rule #1 - when someone else screws up, don’t even glance at them, don’t smile or frown, just keep on trucking with your part and your cool, cool bass face. Nothing is more of a d*ck move than to call attention to someone else’s mistakes on stage.

This is literally more important, and often easier to maintain, than Band Rule #2 (don’t date your bandmate’s SO).
