I’d completely forgotten about this song and had absolutely no intention of covering it, but hey I’m a sucker for a good country drinking song. No 1 in the Country chart in 1981.
I was watching Tom Bukovac’s YouTube channel (He’s a Nashville session guitarist) a few days ago. He was goofing about with another Nashville professional musician Gord Mote. Blind from birth, he’s got this encyclopedic memory for a tune. He’s just an amazing person to spend time with.
Tom and Gord were discussing greatest piano intros on a country song and this came up. I’ve linked the video with Gord below my cover. Worth a look.

@Barney that’s a pleasant surprise. Good cover and I admire your discipline of alternating your plugging fingers. Didn’t know you have the country in you, that’s awesome.
On the side note, it looks like the guitar and bass were pre-Ernie Ball MusicMan sponsored, it’s great to see those instruments.
Got it. Yeah, I had to crank it up the bass volume because this song is quite noisy and I wasn’t able to get a bassless version of it. The sound of this bass is not as smooth as my Precision too (this bass is active, so it has a lot of “growl”). I’m still getting used to it.
Wow I take a couple of days away from the Covers thread and everyone posts quality stuff! I had to spend some time drying out after roleplaying Lemmy for that month and there’s been a ton of work recently…
Which brings me to my cover - Take this job and shove it by Johnny Paycheck!
I’m currently working on a Manowar cover but I thought I’d stop banging my head against a wall (metaphorically) and try something a little simpler. I was in for a shock - the chorus is easy but the verse section is actually pretty difficult to remember so I had to read it off the tab as I was playing. Hence, some fudges in the video…
The weapon of choice was the Höfner - just with the bass rolled back a little. I also added a little compression after recording to bring out the tone. Actually, I think my strings are one year old to the day!
Not gonna write the track name yet since it’s still WIP, still.
Just first take/cold start playing audio for now testing new Custom Shop 60’s pups.
My fingers werent working properly. Had some delays
Try to guess the track.
@Barney, what an awesome cover. Perfect playing. I didn’t know this band (Alabama) but I need to check them out after that. The kind of country that I like. I’m curious, the three stripes on your bass… Are those from factory? Or did you customize it?
@Ed, what happened to the Rick?? Cool Hofner, though! Great playing, I think this is the only Johnny Paycheck that I know
@Growl, what equipment are you using to get this tone? Sounds really cool. The song has some Michael Jackson’s Thriller to it… but just some? I think it’s great so far.
So am I @Barney…… You knocked this one outta the park! Your timing was so friggin’ spot ass on!! Not a lot of notes, but the ones you played along with how you played them were dynamite! Tone was spot on, and combined with the mix, made me feel like I was back in the 80’s at an Alabama concert…. You did this one justice…. Well, well done…
Great covers @robbp , @Barney , @Ed , @Growl ! There’s nothing I can add that hasn’t already been said. Everyone’s doing great work here.
Kudos to all!
Theres Fender Jazz with CS 60’s pups, Universal Audio Volt 1, Aplitube 5 with some amp & cab simulation. Rest of it all is in 90% thump, 5% pluck and 5% missed noted.
Probably cause Quincy Jones is involved in both
As usual, great playing and editing
I wanna see one edit with compliation of rugs.
