The great thing about this thread @brik1970 is that it’s a kind of time machine. I did the Folsom Prison Blues cover in April 2021. I just went back and re watched my video. It’s really interesting to see how far you can progress in a few years, if you’re prepared to just put the work in.
Exactly! It’s precisely why I decided to participate in the challenge to begin with. I figured it would be a great idea to have a reference point to come back to and compare against, which obviously can be done just for personal gain, but I also challenged myself to just put myself out here with fellow alum and other travelers. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I am determined to get through all 50/(51) songs, in order, even songs I don’t personally care for, as they all seem to have something to offer. At least, I assume that’s why Josh chose the songs he did (and the order of them?), but regardless its a personal challenge at this point as well.
Inspired by @barney 's Huey Lewis cover, I thought I’d go back to happier times and try Summer of 69!
Don’t be fooled by my miserable mug on the thumbnail. This was actually a pretty easy song to learn and seriously good fun to play.
So… lets see what Bryan Adams was doing in the summer of 85!
Great job Ed! It looked like you were having fun with that one.
Nice work!
I got into bass playing for the laughs and the women, @JerryP , and the women stopped a long time ago
What’s wrong with fun @Ed? nothing Eh! Up here the Canadian Broadcasting Act stipulates broadcast programs must feature at least 35 per cent Canadian content, or Cancon.
So imagine how many times I’ve heard that song on the radio on job sites over the past 15 years and I still love it.
Nice work all round
You’ll have never seen the TV show, but back in the 80’s there was a super odd program called The Adventure Game. Contestants had to solve a series of puzzles with shonky special effects. Anyway i can never see a plant up on a stand with out thinking “Gronda Gronda”.
Good cover @brik1970 right on the dot.
Wow, great flair and flawless picking skillz, I’m so envious! Lord knows I tried many times to just pick it but something would go wrong,
Are you strumming too, darned!
Excellent @Ed. I love the tone. Your energy while playing is pretty awesome too. I like the little extra flair you added.
Thanks @Barney
Hah actually I do sort of vaguely remember the adventure game ! Didn’t the contestants have to get across some kind of grid with an invisible enemy trying to get them? Great stuff - don’t get that nowadays …
Thanks @Al1885 @brik1970 I thought " Ed give yourself a present, relax and mess about a bit with a simpler track." I’d better get back to some tougher songs but it’s good to take a break
An old favorite from way back, heard it on the radio and wanted to play it. Thanks for watching!
Technical: Squire direct in to Scarlette 2i2, Reaper DAW, CLA-76 Compressor, Ampeg V4B sim.
Man, I forgot all about this song - haven’t heard it in years. I’ll have to put it on my list to play at some point. Thanks @JerryP and good work!
You pick great songs @JerryP that’s studio ready. I love it. All the notes are just right on the dots.
I was thinking the same as @brik1970 : I like your energy for this cover. You seem to enjoy what you’re playing and I think it shows in the result. Nicely done !
Well done @Vince !
- I feel a special bond now with you staring into my eyes with all those hearts floating around.
- Like @Barney despises the Beatles, I despise Clapton by a factor of 9.652. But unlike @Barney hearing the tunes here doesn’t change my opinion. The exception to this is The Core - I think because of the dueting woman’s voice.
- Overall very good. If I would offer any advice, it is to check your fretting hand position and plucking angle/technique. Looks like you are pulling up a little vs. raking or dragging your fingers across the strings (see Josh’s lessons on this). It ends up looking like you are scatching an itch vs. proper plucking. My old bass teacher was on me all the time about this.
Well done.!!
This sounds really really good man!
Tone, groove, everything.
Fantastic!
@Ed !!
This was terrific, pure gold man.
Great technique and feel.
I think you are ready to buy a guitar now, lol.
What’s in the bowl?
