Post your covers! (2023)

I blame auto sync for that one :joy:
Haven’t done much editing tbf lol.

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:
Love it with the Ernie Ball strings on now

Well done my man, sounded good. I agree with Barney’s assessment, never underestimate what can be achieved with a more budget-orientated approach and a little ingenuity and skill/practice.

True!
Haven’t even bothered with tones  all clean the last couple, bass to the interface & just record :slightly_smiling_face:

Dios mio man! Today I try to bring some Mediterranean passion to the forum with my cover of the Gipsy Kings cover of Hotel California - a vastly superior version in my opinion!

The song is relatively long at nearly six minutes, but the first minute is just the guitar intro (bass doesn’t come in until about the one minute mark) and most of the bassline is an eight-bar sequence, apart from the chorus (another eight bars) and the interlude.

Totally worth learning if you want to get your feet tapping!

I was going to put loads of clips from The Big Lebowski in the intro but it would take ages using my cheesy free video editor. It was difficult enough syncing the audio track (as you can probably see…)

Oh a kickass song there @JerryP ! I’m actually seriously GASsing for a squier p-bass at the moment and this video might push me over the edge…

Sounds good to me @DeadPixels - are you trying to read the tab straight off a screen? It’ll really make your life easier if you spend more time memorising the song before trying to record so you don’t have to flip between the score and bass. Or, if you’re trying to read off a score, try to keep your hand in one position and use all four strings - you won’t have to keep checking where your hand is.

Nice one @dlamson13 - that fretless has a lush tone to it. Perfect choice for this imo

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:
Yeah, I dunno what it is, but I can never remember a damn thing!
Literally spent like half an hour yesterday playing the same 10 seconds of a song over and over at half speed, an hour later, forgotten the whole thing :joy:
I blame too many bangs to the head when I was young and stupid

Chunk it.
Find chunks of the song, riffs etc and know them cold. Then ID transitions of the chunks and put them together. Make little notes however it’s meaningful to you. @Ed is right, your playing and timing will improve when you know the tune better. Chunking is the tried and true technique to this. I make half sheets of paper notes on order of chunks, then once each chunk is baked in, you’re only memorizing chunk sequence.
Is it hard? Yep - but keep at it, it works!

Thanks very much Brik1970!

Excellent playing Ed! Got me up and going. Great rendition by The Gypsy Kings, never heard it before. Great job!

Love me some Gipsy Kings @Ed
One of my favorite bands of all time.

You did a great job here, this is not easy.
I feel like I hear you lagging a bit early on, then by the first chorus you really lock into the groove perfectly. The lagging creates a bit of ‘drag’ to me, where the original has the bass almost propelling the tune forward with the guitars (a very Gipsy Kings thing).
Net/net you got there and stayed there and it was beautiful.
Do you hear this too or is it just me?

Pure gold man.

Only thing missing is a rug.

Thanks! I always have a problem getting into the groove with a song - the first verse is always a bit rough and laggy. I guess I just have to spend more time rehearsing! Still, this was seriously good to play and the time actually passes pretty quickly when you get into it…

This is the feeling I got (at least in the original ) - it really turns the Eagles version around :+1:

I only got into it when I watched ‘The Big Lebowski’ and the scene in the bowling alley

That’s what it is man - music is a shed load of grinding …

@DeadPixels - here is one in working on now and what I mean about chunks and notes. Each chunk is down cold. I added colors which related back to the tab/sheet music so when learning I could go back and find my place if I forgot something easier.

I’m now at the point that I don’t need the notes…time to record.
Btw, the end is super fast, so, I learned it first.
Also, on transitions, find something to cue you - a lyric, a chord or drum pattern change, etc.

Thanks @John_E! That’s exactly what I hear too. I have better muscle memory for the fret widths on the low part of the neck and think that helps too. In any case I’m learning a lot from the forced ear training playing fretless requires.

Sounds great to me! Nice thump on this.

Exactly, there is no substitute for quality time with your bass. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Squier CV series (just got a Jazz myself), but @JerryP will sound good on any bass he picks up.

That was some great playing @Ed! I love this version too. To me it’s cool how even though the original bass is so iconic the Gypsy Kings were like “Nah, we’re not playing that”. This line gives the song much more energy while keeping the mysterious vibe of the original.
