Very nice @JerryP - I which I could get my Hof to sound like that. Maybe I should invest in some new strings…
Thank you Lanny! Always appreciated.
Thanks Ed! I have on the Hofner the LaBella Beatle flats and a little tweaking in the mixing helps.
Awesome @JerryP, another Beatles cover with the Hofner! It sounded great on my headphones. Definitely gonna do a Beatles track in 2023, I’ve been considering Day Tripper, but the picking seems quite daunting for that.
I know McCartney is a pick player, so do you always use one if you’re playing a Beatles song? Looking forward to more Fab 4 from you.
Nice one @DeadPixels, sounds good. Love a bit of Rocksmith 2014, but not so much how it processes the sound of the bass.
@Lanny - In defence of Rocksmith, it’s basically a flashy tab. Behind every song is a Guitar Pro tab.
Rocksmith is what got me into playing bass. After an alcohol fuelled night at a friend’s house, I gave it a go (I was terrible, BTW) and a couple of months later ended up buying a copy of the game and a bass.
I consider Rocksmith more as a gym than a game. I can test drive songs to see if they are worth learning. You can break up the song into sections and slow it down for practice. However, I found that it’s not the best for properly learning a song. For learning, I prefer Go Play Along 4 or Guitar Pro.
I totally get why some people wouldn’t get along with it though.
cheers
yeah, it can be a bit hit or miss sometimes generally not too bad though
Exactly this!
It’s easy to get into and just playing stuff, custom charts are mostly tabs directly from Guitar Pro (even made a handful (badly) myself ).
My playing now is 100% from rocksmith, no YouTube videos, no lessons, just a copy of the game and a cheap yamaha bass from Facebook marketplace a couple of years ago
even easier to break songs down into exactly the sections you want now with the mods out there for it, not just the predefined sections it usually gives
I understand only 50% of your technical here, but I sure do love your sound ! Nice cover
Thank you Steve!
I’ve gone back to using a pick when I play Beatles on the Hofner. For a while last year I was plucking the Hofner for my Beatles covers. I have seen videos where McCartney plucked a few tunes.
Thank you @mediaklan !
You may see others list the technical stuff as well. It’s basically what used to get the tone that I was going for. If you have any questions about recording, there are many more BassBuzzers here that are much more expert than yours truly.
The bass coming from the game would lag. So I would use the splitter to let me plug one cable into the game to track my notes or get a score- and I would plug a second cable into my amp so I would get the direct sound from my bass which would’t lag.
Cool thanks. Do you know where you get the splitter cable? I know one has to be usb. Thanks.
I’m sorry, I was unclear. Any cable splitter like these will do. Then you have to use the cable that comes with the game to plug into the xbox and the other cable is your normal instrument cable.
Rocksmith is what got me to play the bass also. Definitely a gateway game
This,… I understand…. A “Gateway”,…. A “Game”…. But in no means a substitute for actually “Learning” any instrument, music composition, theory, style, chord structure, etc….
Forgive me for being so damn blunt, but I have spent many of my 70+ years here on planet earth learning to play different instruments from great teachers - Josh (B2B) with bass, my grandmother on piano, and numerous others on classical guitar, banjo, many different mentors on each, and have dedicated many hours learning and playing in numerous bands over the years and if there is one thing that I have learned, it is that music, no matter what instrument you play, is always played from the soul - it is not a “hand/eye” video screen coordination thing…. It’s a feeling from within where “you and the instrument” connect to create that Segway of communication using frequencies that are beyond human understanding.
My grandkids have used Rockfish, - however when I had them shut it off and just try to play with me without the video screen, it was disastrous…. Yes, a “Gateway” and a “Game”…. They all soon realized that in order to become musically “competent”, much more than a video game was required…
Like I said, I’m just an old dude and sometimes it’s a bit difficult for me to understand and accept many of these new things…. I just hate to see the one thing in life that I hold dear (using an old dude term) being “dummied down” in order to make things easier - at the expense of true (and historical) musical wisdom and knowledge….
Hmmm… I’ve played “Call Of Duty” with my adult grandkids - does that qualify me to be a Badass Soldier??. Hell, I can only get past the “Recruit” level anyway…. Get my ass beat by them every time!!.
Sorry @terb for getting off topic here. Won’t happen again….
Lanny Out….
Hey @Lanny actually it’s not just a game, it’s actually a great tool. It’s the best way to build up muscle memory. I do have issues with their songs selection (Xbox) version. It’s not a lessons replacement but enhancement. If you like the songs they have it’s one of very few great practice tool available. Except for lead sheet/ cheat sheet I don’t sight read when I play. When I play I want to be engage with the music and not read anything, that’s for practice.
I’m definitely looking forward to get back and play game and play all the songs that I bought, lol.
Completely understand both points, I said somewhere, it’s very easy to become reliant on it and not really learn much, or commit a song to memory.
But I literally never touched the bass before getting rocksmith, the amount of song choices, built in mini games to help with techniques etc. its helped by keeping things fun/engaging up to the point I’m not getting any better now with that alone.
100% can be used as a tool to break down and slow/gradually speed up sections etc.
It.’s a great start for non guitar/bass player to get things started but, and it’s a big but, they’d need to get some pro tips on how to properly make contact with the instrument.
I’ve seen a few videos on YouTube where people shreds but they were not properly taught they look all over the place, economy of motion can help a lot.
I like the fact that these (Xbox version) are legit. They are licensed songs and all of the music sounds awesome.
no problem at all ! everybody do that
Personnally I have no problem with Rocksmith. It’s definitly not for me and I even don’t want to try it, but I understand that it can bring some appetite for playing music to some people. Maybe the real thing starts after Rocksmith : it wouldn’t be a bad gateway, if it leads to a real bass course like B2B.
Every tool is not for everybody
I am kind of the same. I own it, it’s cute and definitely can exercise coordination skills, but I don’t really ever play it. Or Yousican or similar.
