The good
You hit the note value really well, these latin type tempo can be tricky to many but it seems to be a non issue to you.
Your plugging hand is doing its job really well when you skip the strings you have no problem with plugging clean notes and muting.
Your playing root and 5th is great!
What you can fix
I think that your bass is out of tune. You may want to tune it up a bit each time before playing, it usually off by a few cents due to the temperature changes mostly. This would fix most of your “off notes”.
Great to see your cover and you are not very far off nailing the cover. I believe there are a couple of spots to look over but you are right there. Tune up the bass and post this song again.
since you mentioned this discussion again, Im going to drop my two cents on recording a cover in too
I like watching the B2B community covers and think its cool that people use different processes to make them
for me posting covers here is a way to chart my progress and a little bit of ‘performance aspects’ training too with the visual part, good for me since I don’t jam with others (or even in front of others)
so I record as many takes as I need (no charts and original bass already removed with moises), to get a useable single take, then I quick mix it (couple of hours max) and match it to the corresponding visual of that take in imovie
when mixing down I have the usual like compression, EQ, and distortion, but I try to go quick and I don’t do any punch ins or edits on the bass (or the visuals) since I am using it as a progress record
Thanks so much @Al1885 for your kind words, glad you enjoyed! To get a good plucking sound here, I had to use a softer touch than I’m used to. Playing soft and quick at the same the time is tricky for me.
Goals matter here for sure. I didn’t start making covers until late - I was already at an intermediate level and actually probably haven’t progressed on bass since then, since that wasn’t my goal. I’m happy where I am at for bass, at least for now.
Since my bandmate and I are covering all of the instruments and vocals (without backing tracks), covers for me are much more about practicing music production - mixing, mastering, balance, multitrack editing, effects, overall compression and EQ, etc. This is the actual hobby for me and so I come in to it with a different viewpoint.
For me, the end product is the only thing that matters. Worrying about getting things down in a single take seems extremely wierd and counterproductive for me, based on my goals. It literally doesn’t matter and is actually harmful if it takes time away from other production tasks.
So yeah, goals matter here. I think your and Al’s take totally makes sense from a “record my personal achievement progress” aspect; I just don’t see music that way, myself.
yeah goals determine the process, thats just my process for the stuff I do for here, if I was doing any real band recordings (covers or otherwise) like you, I would edit as required in that situation where you use all your production skills and tricks get to the best version you can for listeners
Hey guys! It’s been a while. I got to go to Lake Powell about a month ago. It’s such a magical place. Then my wife got sick, then I got sick, and then my son got sick. So it’s been a rough few weeks around here. However, one night last week, I was watching clips of @midnight on YouTube and a bunch of clips for The Midnight kept coming up. After a while I decided to click on one of the videos and, what do you know, they are a band. I haven’t listened to a lot of their stuff yet, but I did like this one and thought it would be fun to play. This is from their 2022 album “Heroes”.
Hey @Reo, the guitars in this song are using a capo on the 1st fret, so you will have to shift all your shapes 1 fret higher. I think it will sound beautiful when you do that. Nice fingerwork!
