Hey @Qohelet-David ! I’m not sure, is Cygnus X-1 a full song or a part of it ?
Bro I feel you on trying to land it on the first take. As for me and my current situation with recording, I have no choice. That’s why I have to for sure redo the whole video if I mess up. I too have gotten to the very last note and flubbed it. I have the mindset that the notes have to land correctly without rushing or dragging for me to post. To me, when I mess up, it’s so cringy I can’t stand it haha
The mess up sticks out like a sore thumb, so it’s back to the lab for another go. Sometimes it seems that the most simplest songs are the worst too. If my neighbors heard me screaming at the tv they would think I was a sailor! Good thing I have space between the houses haha. In most of my earlier videos I would talk before I played. I gave that up, since I would feel the need to go through my whole spill again and again until I finally nailed the song. I got tired of that so I just play now. There’s songs I’ve even just gave up on because I couldn’t get the rhythm down. I guess it’s a good thing to be so over picky with it, but sometimes I’d love to just pull my hair out!!
“Cygnus X-1” is a 10-minute song, I just did the prologue because that’s all I know for now.
The other parts are insane on bass.
yeah, not the easiest one
nice playing already !
For your information there is another thread for partial covers : Post your practice fragments!
But that’s not very important except for our yearly statistics
keep on Rushing ! ![]()

I’m gettin’ there. I still need to get a DAI cable and all that. I’m also gonna have to read up on the thread that talks about home recording in this forum. I’m not quite 40 but I’m a dinosaur; I had a flip phone up until last year when I was forced to modernize. For now, I’m just focusing on getting better and having fun. I do want to post a cover though. I think it would be helpful to get some feedback from some of you guys that can really rock.
It’s actually surprising simple, once you know how. To be honest, I didn’t go through that forum thread, or the videos, I asked a colleague at work, who also happens to play bass. He gave me a 10 min tutorial and I was away… ![]()
I choose to do a “live” style of video instead of putting it on a DAI/DAW. Then I also choose to leave the miss notes in. I think it’s a good reminder when I look back and review my cover videos and see how I progress.
The problem with redoing is that it leads to more redoing. I used to do a dozen takes but now unless it’s major I try to just move on in just one or two takes. Well, in my case one or two on each bass ![]()
It helps me reduce and / eliminate the mistake a lot. As the matter of fact, it seems like once I was determined to leave mistakes on the video, my mistakes were almost gone and I play much cleaner than I was with the “undo” attitude ![]()
It’s all nerves for me. I worked on that Talking Heads song for 3 weeks. I could play it without looking at the music or the fretboard. As soon as I started trying to record it, my left hand would go dumb. That’s also why I think it’s important to get good at recording yourself play, especially if you ever have any hopes of doing it in front of people.
It’s part of the training somewhat, yeah
Well, it’s not the same. Recording on video is much much harder.
Playing in front of people is super easy, especially if you have my experience doing it.
For one thing, playing live is a one time deal, there’s no replay, no slomo, no analysis. Your audience hear it once with every instrument’s accompaniment behind your bass as well as whatever is going on around them. Even if you are a gigging bassist it’s hard to pinpoint any mistakes (minor) unless the player reacts to the mistakes like shaking head or smiling.
Your average audiences have no chance of recognizing your flaws zero. Now, recording on video is whatever I just mentioned but in reverse.
good news is bassbuzzers have very forgiving ears and very encouraging. It’s also the best way to gauge your level of performance when you watch it in 6 months or so.
It’s one of the best lessons you can do and it’s measurable especially to you who knows what mistake you made.
It’s all about goals. If your goal is to play cover songs to backing tracks while filming yourself, or to play live, then sure, learning to play the entire song in a single take is fine.
If your goal is to have fun developing music production techniques and eventually getting back in to working on your own new music, and don’t really care about live play, then a more production oriented workflow is appropriate.
If your goal is to jam with buddies, you don’t need to record at all ![]()
None of these are wrong.
Nice one @faydout, great first cover! Love the song choice too, haven’t heard it in a long time. That chorus will be stuck in my head for a while.
When you do your videos how do you get the recording to pick up the bass? I tried playing something to record on my laptop camera but the bass is too deep and doesn’t register; it just tamps down the track and you really can’t hear anything other than the higher notes and the occasional clacking sound. It may be the limitations of my laptop but I was just curious if there was a work around.
@Jacob
There’s a few ways you can do it. The way I do it is live so the audio and video is recorded together not separated.
Here’s what I posted earlier
Kasabian - Re-Wire
Ok, my friends, group pressure was finally effective and I want to punish you with my first cover.
Thank you @sunDOG, @Al1885, @howard and everybody else to be such an unbelievable pain in the @ss about this! Oh, and @faydout, for being the f#cking first ![]()
Some remarks:
- as long as I’m shy, fat and generally ugly I will not post videos of me playing. I went through all kinds of video filters, but there is none against shyness!
- As I don’t understand all the beautiful VST’s I own, I just played into Studio One and used the Universal Audio 1176 and AmpliTube 360 Bass Preamp. I was really fed up with all the choices.
- If you are in Russia: please leave the country to “enjoy” my cover, as copyright does not allow for it.
- Yes, my timing sucks, especially at the end. I promise to get better! If you had given me more time to practice, this would not be so shameful.
- I took some liberties while playing, as I tend to forget everything around me and just go with the flow…
- Last but not least: I played this on my little Blackstar Travel Bass - my way to say goodbye to it, at leat for playing on the sofa. We had some good times, little one

Still there? Here it is:
@BozzerWolf now you are the last man (with)standing ![]()
Welcome to the party, @Whying_Dutchman!
I love this song, the bass sounds good, what’s not to like?! Well done dude!
That’s cool @Whying_Dutchman , congrats on your first cover !
It’s not mandatory at all. The video part of the covers has always been some kind of “bonus” to make the covers more fun to watch, but that’s all. What matters is the audio track.
Not perfect but not horrible at all !
Yeah, no - the end is terrible! I did too many takes, got tired, wanted to get over with it and thought “if I don’t post it now I will never do it!”.
But I will re-record the cover with my new bass - cause I like this song a lot!
My first “cover love” ![]()
“I feel like the time has come
A fearless rescue from everyone”
Well done!
Erg goed! ![]()
If I could play like this, I had spam this thread with thousands of covers, but I can’t…
