Yeah, but you let a Dutch guy beat you to it? I give you a fat LOL!!
What about German honour?

Also, the camera loves you … imagine: you, your dog, your new bass?

YOU MUST DO IT, my friend!

Amazing job! I heard a few spots where it sounded like you were just a touch excited to play the next note, but if I wasn’t specifically listening for that (because it’s an issue I have) I wouldn’t have noticed. I was in the same boat as far as being just tired of re-recording the one song and just hitting publish at the end of trying to get it right. I could hear my mistakes and knew I was frustrated and making them worse.

I feel a lot better for getting it done and am actually a little excited to get the next one out.

Same here!
I wish that “excitement” was the cause of the lack of timing.
But sometimes I just don’t listen to the song, and play in “autistic” mode. A band would hate me for that

And in the final part I was just tired (4 hours sleep yesterday) … and this is were the funny little complications of that song were.

So, I will redo it with my new bass!

But, it really is a big step that cannot be overappreciated: there is a difference between just noodling for yourself on the sofa and noodling on the sofa, with the intention to let other people hear what you’re doing!

So, I feel also better about getting to do the next one. Will wait for you, as “always”…

Nice work @Whying_Dutchman

I can hands down say the best thing for my playing has been the discipline of recording myself.
Because when you listen back to it without a bass in your hand, it’s almost like a different part of your brain is doing the assessment.

In conclusion ‘You can’t bullshit yourself when you’ve hit record’

Also learning a song so you don’t need to look at the music/tab allows you to listen to the song. Knowing it gives you the mental bandwidth to pay attention to where you are.

Once again great stuff and listening back in a year or so is always fun.

Very true!

In the beginning, playing along a song, I felt guilty for the band when I played wrong. I know it’s stupid, and the band can never hear when I play to their recording. But I can’t count how many times Shirley Manson looked at me with a mixture of anger and despise (in my imagination) when I tried to play Garbage tracks! I was garbage, but not in a good way. Ask imaginary Shirley !

Now I am over that and you BassBuzzers became my new Shirley Manson. I’m sure you look just as great as she did in a dress

As I am a music freak, it really gives me great joy when I do not notice it’s me that’s playing in a recording. When I notice myself, I know I’m doing it wrong…

Thanks for posting that, @Al1885. That’s really helpful (and thorough). I’ve got to get the right equipment for the job. I got a little too eager and thought I could half-ass it by just recording into my laptop (no mics) with the track going in another window. No go. I just wanted to show you guys where I’m at and put myself out there so it’s not all on you guys. i.e. Here’s what I can do so when I comment you don’t mistakenly think this guy’s opinion is informed or matters. Again, I appreciate the help. This forum, and you guys, are really awesome.

Congrats on getting your cover out there. Really well done. I’ll get my cover up when I get a bit of equipment so you can really see how well you’re doing. Keep up the good work and keep enjoying the music.

Hey great job @Whying_Dutchman

While listening my brain automatically quantize the beat and your playing. It sounds good man. I don’t see the problem with your playing. I’d imagine that when you are couch surfing you can play this song in your sleep perfectly, so it’s just the level of effort.

You just have to try much much less. :joy:

Your notes would simply drop right on top of the down beat without hesitation and anticipation. When you put to much effort into playing you are anticipating every notes then shine a spotlight on your fretting, plugging, counting, and that’s when your playing can oscillate.

You’ll notice that your improvement will be exponential on your next cover, and who knows maybe you’d even show us some of your playing video too. Give us a chance to “Simon Cowell” your a$$, :joy:

Good one Bud, welcome to the club!

Mayer Hawthorne - Without You

This one took longer than expected! I originally recorded this one playing finger-style but then I thought it needed a bit more attack on the notes so I re-recorded it with a pick. I also tried various tone settings and ultimately ended up around 25-30% on the tone knob.

Very much appreciated!!! You know that playing for you and the other gals and guys (and everyone else ^^) is much harder than for imaginary Shirley

Your welcome @Jacob

I highly suggest the MoMix to start, because it’s cheap and you can use your phone to do the job. You may also want to pick up a phone stand, it’s pretty cheap too unless you want to splurge for the Peak Designs phone tripod. :joy:

It’s super easy to setup and you can also do all of the editing on your phone through the Roland 4Camera app. Best and cheapest way to produce a good cover video.

You just have to play around with the mix a bit. The level you hear on your headphone is usually as accurate as the final mix level, if your bass sound perfect in the headphone mix, it’s usually too much in the final mix, :joy:

You want to imagine a cover videos like @Barney.

He’s relaxed and singing along and smiling throughout the song. It’s so good it’s annoying, :joy:

I’m don’t have that “singing along and smiling” personality.

I’m more like this guy when playing

Thanks Al!

If you mean working the album, I am doing just that! I’ve done 5 of the 13 tracks. There are 3 interlude-type tracks that I might work on together and post them in a single go.

One song is going to require an envelope filter so I’ve put that on the back-burner. The challenge of the album will be the song “On The Floor” in which Blu DeTiger wrote the bass line. It’s much more active than any other track!
