Post your covers! (2024)

Your first cover video approaches. It’s a large one, six minutes.
Roll D20 for badassery.

You have slayed your first cover video.

Well done! I loved how emotive you were, one could tell you were feeling that. Way to jump in with both feet and thanks for sharing your cover!

Thank you Al!

I tried it out for tone but the Hamer came closer to the original recording.

Thanks alot sunDOG. Maybe next time I’ll try three camera angles.

Another great job @JerryP ! Love that tune, what a fun bassline! Out of sheer curiosity, why not the Hofner for this one?

Doh! Missed some posts while I was watching your vid, LOL

Well done! Just left you a comment on the 'tube too. The first cover takes a lot of guts to do and post. Your timing seemed really good for someone just two months in.

Always happy to see a red TRBX in action too, loved mine.

Congrats on the first cover! It’s all downhill from here :face_holding_back_tears:

You sounded pretty great to me! My only advice would be to crank the bass! It was a little bit low in the mix to my ears

Lol! Thank you :slight_smile:

Heh, music is definitely a passion that I feel all the way down to my toes.

Thank you @howard, appreciate it.

I’ve always had a really good innate sense of timing and rhythm, my old bass teacher commented on it too. I definitely got lucky there. :slight_smile:

And I have zero regrets on the Yamaha, very thankful for all the recommendations, because I love it. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thank @Ant. I’ll remember that, I nipped it down just before I rendered the video because I thought it was over the top.

I normally try to post an individual comment on every cover, however, you all have gone nuts, and, I have been swamped with work and travel for said work, and the forum only allows a single person to post 15 comments in a row. So, if I ever intend to catch up…here we go…

There you go! Really great job!!!

@cheeze_pizza Mayer Hawthorne - Without You
Nice groove, a more relaxed feel playing would go well with the tune, but sounded great.

@sunDOG Melanie C - Never Be The Same Again
Well done. “simple” songs like this, where the bass is so exposed, require exacting timing, you nailed it! Simple is never so simple.

@sunDOG Primal Scream - Swastika Eyes
Holy production value Batman!
Just fantastic!

@Diego317 Simple Minds - Don’t you (forget about me)
Sounded absolutely perfect

@cheeze_pizza
Mayer Hawthorne - Hawthorne Rides Again
Sounded much more laid back - nice groove!
Mayer Hawthorne - Cream Interior
Same here, great playing!
Mayer Hawthorne - Deuce and a Quarter
Yep, Mr. R B Funk you are!

@TheMadBassist RADIOHEAD - STREET SPIRIT ( FADE OUT)
I haven’t heard of this one, but really liked it and your playing.

@beaurapp 99 Luftballons by Nena
I JUST listened to this album today, both English and German sides, really great.
You did great, and you all are sounding pretty darn good!

@cheeze_pizza Delegation - Oh Honey
GREAT playing - a bit high in the mix and boomy, but damn if you didn’t sound great

@JerryP Booker T & The MG’s - Green Onions
There’s that crazy good Ibanez again! Sounding really great Jerry!

@sunDOG Goin’ Down by Melanie C.
I didn’t actually realize there were two Mel’s in Spice Girls, lol
Great tune, will def give a listen.
Very well done!

@JustinAndSheba Mercyful Fate - Curse of the Pharaohs (1983) bass cover
Never heard this one before, but, as usual, fantastic playing.
A bit high and boomy in mix but nice galloping along!

@ChrisoBass Simple Minds Don’t You (Forget about me)
Great songs are worth having lots of folks do!
Nice touch with the pick, well played.

@terb Les filles d’à côté - theme
Oh man, I could have done the bari sax bits for you!
Nice walking bass lines and what a fun tune!
Sounded great!

@Diego317 Green Day - 21 Guns
Another I did not know.
And you were great, just great!

@sunDOG Taylor Swift - Clara Bow
I think you get the prize for first Taylor Swift cover on the forum!
I also think this is your best cover yet.
I saw Taylor a zillion years ago before no one knew who she was, she was the warmup act for Rascal Flats (a concert I got dragged to by a pretty girl). I ended up loving the entire show and was really confused why Taylor was the opener, even though I had never heard of her - she was that good then. This was great playing, you did not miss a beat, literally, and that is no small feat on this one!!

@Diego317 Coldplay - Yellow
One of our 50 Song Challenge tunes.
Please load it over there as well for folks to reference in the future.
Nice playing indeed!! It’s a fun one! Bass a bit high in mix but sounds great!

@Al1885 Song Love Shack by B-52
Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnn Roof! … Rusted!
Great great playing - however - I cannot for the life of me figure out how you played this without smiling! Such a fun song.

@ChrisoBass Europe The Final Countdown
Nice pick work - this song was ruined in the USA by (I think) an insurance? commercial, but I jammed out on it in high school many times.

@dlamson13 Pearl Jam - Black
I have always thought I hated Pearl Jam, then last year something flipped in my brain/ears and I am so so so in love with them. This was effortlessly beautiful. Fantastic!!

@sunDOG We Will Rock You - Queen
lololol - bass a bit low in the mix here :upside_down_face:

@Ant Alice In Chains - Man In The Box
WOW - great playing - love this tune too. You did it great justice for sure!

@JustinAndSheba Stone Temple Pilots - Sour Girl (1999) bass cover
Another I don’t know, another I now love.
Great playing.
Reminds me more of XTC than STP

@TheMadBassist AC/DC - HELL’S BELLS
Here’s the thing, you did it! Despite it not wanting to be done!!
I have been struggling with every single song I try to cover not wanting to be done.
My focus is at work sadly and music is suffering.
So, I say, take the win, cause you did it anyway!!!

I can’t do anymore, more another time…
Eeeesh - you all are killing it!!!

You guys should totally do this! I am on a mission to get more people to do full covers and am super happy to see @sunDOG start them. It’s motivating me to do more :rofl:

@John_E, thank you for your kind comments!

How cool is that to have chance seen Taylor Swift when she was an unknown. My 10 year old daughter is in to her music and wanted to see her - she’s currently touring in the uk. But blimey, you simply cannot get tickets, even though she’s apparently playing to a million people.

These pared back songs - the Swift one, the Mel C one, and one I posted this last weekend - are great fun. The bass is so exposed that you have to get it right; obviously part of the development journey!

Once again, thanks!

The challenge is getting a decent recording / video! One could go to the lengths of plugging everyone in to a mixing deck and then running an interface off that, but when we’re together as a band, the focus is on just trying to nail the songs, hence the iPhone videos. It is super useful recording songs though - you can see and hear the mistakes :rofl:

I would 100% recommend running everyone into a mixer and PA, you can then record off one of the outs (or directly to DAW for modern mixers.)

You can still use your anps as monitors if they have DI out.

Your guitarist will be finicky about this depending upon how much they love their amp tone. As a bass player you have other options but guitarists really love their amps :slight_smile:

good mixers are not expensive really. decent PA’s are cheaper than bass amps size for size.

Check out the Zoom Q8N 4k. It has decent video quality but outstanding audio capabilities and expansion. I’ve been using mine and I’m quite happy with the audio flexibility and quality.

Thanks John!! Much appreciated on the comments!! The cool thing about this thread is I’m hearing new songs I’ve never heard. I would probably never have been introduced to some very cool music had I not been a part of this great group of people! Thanks to everyone for sharing your covers!

I think that’s a bit out of my price league for just recording practice sessions :wink:

Maybe add to the Xmas list!!
