When I first heard it, I thought the same, but it has its nuances hidden in each verse.
Thank you!

I feel I should thank and apologise to @saroohoo in equal measure, for this one!
Prior to saroohoo’s mention of Elastica’s song, Connection, in a thread about songs that influenced you to play bass, I hadn’t really registered Elastica. The song came out a few years after I left university, and was part of the whole BritPop thing, that to be honest, didn’t really resonate with me. Oasis, The Happy Mondays, Blur (a number of the band were contemporaries of mine at university, although I can’t say I knew them) … I guess I’d moved on the trying to build a career and drinking too much red wine at the weekends!
Anyway, I listened to Connection last week and thought WOW! Short, sweet and what a freakin’ baseline! Those slides!!!
Elastica - Connection
Played on my Steinberger, in a hotel room, while away on business. Look, I’m even wearing a suit
@sunDOG Yay! Nicely done, and rocking the suit.
That’s awesome, great job! If you want to keep going down this rabbit hole, Justine Frischmann, the lead for Elastica was/is also in Suede. Very worth checking out, imo Suede is the better band of the 2.
Very cool!
Still don’t get how you do those slides … I know the version without the slides (I’m not sure if that slide even exists in the original version as a bass tone, if you listen closely)
But of course this has no point anymore after your cover
Can you explain that slide?
If I remember correctly, slides are a part of the B2B course
Got it! I already edited my original post. I have a focusrite and ableton live software and hope to learn to record more professionally. Until then, cellphone and TV LOL.
Hahaha! I mean: sliding from where to where?
This is the tab I have:
No slide (but an additional E4, that is missing in @sunDOG’s cover)
It seems to use a similar approach as this (not very good) cover:
(Also missing the E4)
EDIT complete tab I have for this song:
Elastica_Connection_v3_p.pdf (330.9 KB)
ok, my bad !
No worries! I expect that @sunDOG 's answer will only prove that my question was stupid for other reasons
Thank you, @saroohoo! I hope you don’t mind me picking up on one of your inspiration songs!!
I have form with rabbit holes, @faydout!
You’re overthinking it, @Whying_Dutchman. The sliding is fun, apart from the little blister I generated doing it Part of the fun of doing covers is listening, then letting the music take you where it takes you. And perhaps most importantly, enjoying the process & learning something at the same time. I wanted to slide around, so that’s what I did. BTW, playing this song sounds freakin’ cool on my fretless, but I didn’t put that bass in the car…
Love it and love the song. I wish I would not be such an ogre as far as recording is concerned. I have a focurite scarlet 2i2 and ableton live software but never used it. I just don’t know how to start. When you hear your sound, I want to try again instead of using the phone and tv lol.
I was really sitting with my face on the screen, waiting for your answer … and should be outside, getting some stuff from the supermarket instead, otherwise I get into trouble with the dictator…
Still: from where to where do you slide? It looks a very fast slide from E6 to E11 and (slower) back … but I don’t get the same effect on my bass
I do get something like that when going from A11 to A6, but hmmm, it still s#cks.
(Also sliding on the A, switching to E6 and then still playing E4 is quite hard for me :-))
The device comes with a lot of video manuals. Give it a try.
Yes, that was more or less where I was sliding from and to - I found the trick to get it sounding good was to keep playing 8th as your doing it. So I didn’t play the note then slide, then play the next note, I continued to play as I slid up then down. That way, you get a nice even tone. I also experimented with how long the slide took and settled on on “1 & 2”, i.e. I was down on the target note at the end of the slide by the second &. Too fast, and you couldn’t hear it, too slow and you just sound out of tune… To be honest, I was just feeling it and bouncing around the hotel room havin’ fun
Ah, thanks! Will try that after diner!
The fingering in the video looks different from what it sounds like. That’s what got me on the wrong track.
(My girlfriend asked me if I am watching porn, based on my last statements in my reply :-))
I’m happy the tune inspired you, and I also agree that there should be fun and freedom in interpreting covers however you want Why not add the slide when it sounds so good?!
Great tune choice, great video @AndreaJayne
Ooooh she’s beautiful
Thank you! I started with a good “cheap” bass, my Donner boy which looks like a Fender, weighs 12 pounds, not bad at all. Still play it. Lady Ibanez I prefer. Love the Ibanez bass sound. She weighs 9 pounds and yes, the three pounds difference are noticeable. She also has a smaller fret board which I like. So far, I am happy playing her. Got her October 23.
