Wild that Alice was able to finish the show after something like that.

This is mostly a test run with the new BB. Pretty unpleased with how it turned out. I’ve got a lot to figure out with this bass. It’s my first active one, I couldn’t get sound levels right, couldn’t get an EQ set that I really liked. Had to swap my mixing board back to my old DAI because the recording level was too quiet to hear that I was playing. I’ve got other songs ready to record so I’ll get back at it tomorrow. Might have to rerecord this one. Done on a BB734a through my SGT set to SVT and 4 X 10. No real effects other than comp.

Dropping the ‘line in’ stream level into your DAI and upping the ‘USB Audio in’, might help to highlight your bass a bit more… I had similar issues at first… ( I use OBS for recording … so I lowered the song… and beefed the bass UP… )

Its a neat example of how there can be nothing wrong with the playing, but the recording makes the player look bad… or a sound engineer, etc… ( not saying you sound bad… btw ) … Tech can make you a god! ( it can also do the opposite… when settings are wonky… LOL )

Great job! Can’t wait to hear it when you get everything dialed in

Edit: I’m still hunting for the sweet spot for recording lol!

I don’t think it turned out bad!

One thing to bear in mind is you don’t need to change the EQ on the bass initially. You can leave it all flat and it will sound different than passive mode, but not be affecting the EQ balance of the tone. Set it flat to start and play with it over time

And give yourself time, this is a more complex instrument than you’re used to. It’s cool to take a bit to get used to it. There’s also always passive mode too.

The bass output level should be in the ballpark of your other instruments; the mixer has many tools to help adjust this (channel input gain, channel level, etc). Also I assume you have the input set to High Z (for instrument level input impedance)?

Also, right next to the main meters, and above the control room output level, there’s a blend knob. This is basically the same as a monitor blend on a DAI. To increase the volume in the speakers of the instrument inputs vs the output sound from the USB audio, turn this knob. It won’t affect the recording, just what you hear.

I actually have my monitors run from the control room outs on mine and not main.

I was about to say I couldn’t hear anything, then realised we had a quick powercut, so my hifi was off

JAMES BLUNT - MONSTERS It’s been a tough week for me. December 12th was the one year anniversary of my dad’s passing. Christmas time won’t be the same again I don’t reckon. I did an Etta James cover in honor of him several days back, but I had been wanting to do this one as well. I guess it’s my way of saying goodbye to him in a sense. Very emotional song. Ugh, it really sucks to lose a loved one. Thank y’all for the support here it means a lot. https://youtu.be/bWRLlWUl3YA?si=RsTwZ-kKB3AjHl9W

Very dramatic bass lines. Is that the DR red devil or pink? The tone is really good.

Sounded fine here! Congrats on the new bass!

Thank you, this is the main reason I went ahead and posted it. The playing was fine, its an easy bass line. It was all in the voicing and recording where my issues were. I was hoping one of you all who know what you’re doing hear something and put me on a path to fixing it. So, the EQ knobs are boosts rather than tone knobs is what, eh? (Sorry, I married a Canadian and picked that up over the years)

By the time I got to recording I had, yep. I’m running the sound from the main output atm, and have the sound coming from my laptop into input 9/10 also. I’ll trry moving it over to control room. I’m wanting to go hard to the right so that all of what I hear is the usb input and not the input from the bass? Thank you, very frustrating last night but I knew it was a me issue. I absolutely love the feel of the BB and how it plays. I just need to figure out how to make it sound how I want it to.

Thank you, I ended up falling back to my old DAI at the end instead of using my new mixing board. Most of my other issues had to do with just the tone of the bass. It’s my first active and I’m trying to figure out how to make it sound like how I want. I’ll get there though.

Thank you, it feels and plays fantastic. Those frets feel so nice and apparently I love a 10" radius. That E string sounded so chonky because I’ve got it tuned down to drop D for that song

I have 4 active basses and end up having to tweak the recording levels for each one, as in they are all different. The ‘hottest’ is my Ibanez. If I try to use the same levels I need for that, with, say, the Dingwall, the Dingwall is too quiet…so initially, it was trial and error.

Regarding EQ’ing the bass, I agree with the point about just setting it flat for the time being. While I can’t speak for your bass, mine are all cut / boost, rather than a tone knob that you find on a passive instrument. One of the basses has bass / treble boot cut, the other three also have a mid cut / boost. Oh, two of them also have a sweepable mid. Of the four, my Sire Fretless is the hardest to get “just right”. To be honest, I think that bass is too complicated and I wish I’d bought a passive :face_with_spiral_eyes:. The Dingwall seems to sound good, whatever you do to it :sunglasses:

Good luck playing around with your new purchase!

Motorhead - Thunder and Lightning

What’s Friday without some Motorhead? I have been neglecting my Ricky of late so I thought it was time to dust off the awesome Okko Motorbass pedal (Lemmy in a box) and see if I was still up for a Motorhead cover.

The result is a little rough around the edges but I think it’s a fair approximation of Lemmy playing live. The song is fairly full on - as usual, you stick your foot hard on the accelerator pedal at the start and hold it there for about three minutes. I don’t know how Lemmy used to play like this for a whole gig, although I heard he used to take a lot of vitamins …

Playing during the guitar solo was difficult because you can’t follow the bars very easily. Still, I think I was more or less within the tolerance you’d expect for Motorhead live.

Oh now and again I do have my eyes closed - I just find it easier to follow fast basslines that way…
