Post your covers! (2025)

Gotye, featuring Kimbra - Somebody I Used To Know

I deliberately backed the bass off in the mix on this one to fit the vibe of the song. If you’re listening on a phone, probably best to use headphones as phone speakers don’t really have the “oomph”. I also decided to use the short scale pink Ibanez EHB1000S for its darker tone.

The thing I find fascinating about doing these covers is looking at how songs are constructed. This song uses just two chords in the verse, then three in the chorus. That’s it, super simple, and yet it sounds fantastic. Just goes to show, complexity isn’t alway what is needed…!

That was nice and smooth BassyBunch. Well done!

That was great Duncan! I like how you mixed the track.

Smooth playing…gotta say I did not follow the jokes in your post because I am not familiar with this band at all! Sound of bass came through fine on my headphones.

Really sweet tone, Duncan…and a “hello!” to the bass family in the background!

I’m in Module 12, and when a friend threw a link to this song in our group chat I realized that I should be able to play along with it. I’m in the middle of learning Folsom Prison Blues for the 50 Songs Challenge, and the same type of bass line fits this song perfectly.

So I used Moises to help me identify the chord progression, applied what I knew from Folsom Prison Blues and from the BassBuzz course so far, and came up with this. It’s nothing fancy, but neither is the song so I figure that’s appropriate.

Again, hats off to all you (long-term, multiple “offender”) contributors here… I just can’t keep up

Here is a tune from the good ole days of prog - U.K.'s iconic “In The Dead of Night”. The challenge is dealing with the odd meters here (mostly 7/4).
A fairly OK version, only a few minor biffs:

Quality and quantity my friend!

Excellent work, - not what I would call a foot tapper, but it grows on you… And such a nice bass! If I had a bass like that I too would not profane the neck with the touch of my bare hand

You’re too kind, Ed! Thanks!

Hahahaha… I’ll use that explanation going forward

Sail Away - Deep Purple

I’m just running through the song and recording the take to see where I’m at. You might notice a couple of spontaneous creative parts in there – or mistakes, depending on how you look at them!

Nice, CrayWolf! Solid root-fifth action on that tune,…great job!

That was killer, Jeorg…love the post-chorus part starting at 1:15…that bass has a sweet tone!

That sounded great, Johnny! Sounds like a fun bass line to play.

Tnx @JohnF It’s great fun to play, and I think it’s a really good tune that’s a bit forgotten. We have yet to play it at a concert, so let’s see how people react at our next show.

Thank you kindly, @JohnF - yes, that bit after the chorus is probably the trickiest (the other stuff is more rhythmically challenging)

Thanks a lot, Jerry!
Yes, there is some grit on that bass (I don’t do that very often). And… it’s a bit forward in the mix
