Question - if a song became known by a different band but you play it on stage with the guy that actually wrote it, is it a cover? ![]()
That is an interesting question. I would think that if the original release of the song became well known, then any subsequent recording or performance of the song even by the songwriter would be considered a cover. A good example is Willie Nelson writing the song Crazy for Patsy Cline and then later on Willie recorded it. Willie’s is considered a cover because Patsy’s version was the well-known version first released. But, the flip side of that may be Wild Horses by the Stones (first released by Flying Burrito Brothers), but I don’t think anyone would consider the Stones version a cover because they had recorded a demo of it first before Gram got a hold of it. So, maybe it depends on just how popular and “definitive” the originally released song was.
Perhaps we should ask John Fogerty?
Enjoyed that one, Duncan! Extra credit for the lip-synching. As I wrote on your YT page, velocity shirt is for your chugging speed!
Thanks for listening to it! I just re-watched it and I think you’re right that I start plucking a fraction of a second before the audio. I’ll have to take my time on the next one to better sync the audio GB file on my macbook to the vid I am shooting on my iphone.
Here’s a good one off the top of my head. Roxy Music’s 2HB, Ladytron, and Bitter-sweet were all on the soundtrack to a movie in the 90s (Velvet Goldmine). They were all recorded by the Venus in Furs, which was Johnny Greenwood and Thom Yorke from Radiohead with the bassist from… Suede (I think, probably wrong), as well as Andy MacKay from Roxy Music. Definitely still covers imo. Even with one of the original Roxy guys in the band. If Bryan Ferry and / or Brian Eno were part of the band that might make it harder to definitively say they were covers, especially Ferry. His voice made Roxy imo. Thom did incredible with it though.
Hell yeah, that jams!![]()
Not much story to this one. It’s a cool song that I hadn’t heard in awhile and it popped up on Apple music a bit ago and I liked the bass line. No effects to it, not even compression or noise gate. This is about as pure a tone as I will ever have. I’ve been working on timing the past few weeks so I’m pissed that there are a couple of stray notes that missed the mark by a quarter second but overall pretty pleased with the sound.
Smashing Pumpkins - Rhinoceros
@Blaze - Here’s the Pumpkins song I’ve been working on, unfortunately I don’t have a matching T for them but I’m good for the next one that I’m working on.
I read something recently on this subject. It all comes down to if the song was released by the writer/original artist, then a later version would be a cover. If the writer recorded it but didn’t release it, then gave that song to someone else, then that later recording and release could be classed as the original.
In the scenario you mention I would see it as a cover of a previously released song, but it’s not set in stone.
I haven’t heard that song before, but agree with the above! Well played, and welcome to the miming bass players club ![]()
Reason I ask is this:
My band have had the privilege of doing short UK tours with Alain Johannes the past two years as his backing band. Alain is a producer and songwriter who has worked with the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Lanegan, all the “stoner rock” people.
So, there is video of us playing “Hanging Tree” - which Alain wrote for a Desert Sessions album, but a minorly re-arranged version was released on a Queens record and that’s where people would most likely know it from. And also Mark Lanegan’s “Gravedigger’s Song” and “Driving Death Valley Blues,” which Alain did the instrumentals for.
Are they covers when we played them with Alain? ![]()

WHat a great song! and you did it such justice.
A bit boomy on my speakers but you nailed the tone like you always do!
WOW!!!
great!!!
weird about the Ricky output, is that normal on the newer ones?
I don’t have that issue
Chuck Mangione recently passed. This is a cover I did 5 years ago, so I thought it would be appropriate to share now…
Chuck Mangione - “Feels So Good” (1977) bass play through
Thanks John!
Recorded this on the road where I don’t have all my tools available, especially my studio monitors. Your comments are always appreciated.
“Show Don’t Tell” by Rush!
This song is was such a challenge because of the changing hand positions for a more trebly tone and there are so many damn string crossings and dead notes. But oh boy, is it fun to play.
Thanks @JohnF! I did get the lip sync wrong in the middle of the song ![]()
Regarding get the vido sync’ed with the audio, yep, that can be a challenge sometimes!!
My challenge is that I can only do it wjile not playing the bass! As a band, we play Twist and Shout. Our vocalist wants us to sing the harmonies … I tried and just can’t do it!!!
Cool, isn’t it? Worth checking out the band, they are very good!
I’m with you on that. There have been songs I’ve managed both on, but generally, I can’t do it either. If we keep at it, we’ll improve. When I’ve watched your band videos I’ve noticed that there isn’t any backing, so I think it will be good if you can add some where possible. ![]()
With the exception of Tom Sawyer (which I’ve loved from when I first heard it aged 12) I really haven’t listened to much Rush at all. That was a good song, and you played that bass line really well. It did sound like a fun one to play
Oh yeah - and great fun to play ![]()
