Beautiful tone. Do you find it hard to play fretless? Just curious because I’d like to own one in the future, so I would be really interested in your personal experience.

Ha! A discussion that was leading to inspiration.

Thank you @Anja ! It’s not super difficult, but with a fretted instrument you have quite a bit more leeway with where you finger the note. With fretless, a slight movement in either direction will pull the note slightly sharp or flat. (Do it quickly in succession and you have vibrato.) So now I’m playing and watching my tuner, or playing against drone notes from open strings to get it just right and drill the sound and feel into my muscle memory and hearing. I’ve already found myself making small micro-adjustments. On top of that you get all the fluidity of sliding between notes and getting that “mwah” - which is intoxicating, lol. It will take some dedicated practice to master.

Thanks Jerry!

Thanks @sunDOG ! I see from YT that you might have had similar inspiration?

The Police - Roxanne

Joining the Sting party, this song clearly does not need an introduction!

@faydout , awesome job and song! :sign_of_the_horns:t2: Deftones are local to me in northern California, great band.

@sunDOG , another excellent cover and video! :sign_of_the_horns:t2:I feel like we may have to start paying to see your stuff!

In my case, it’s a song I’ve needed to learn for the band. We’re working on the next 10 or so, looking to get ourselves up to 30 / 35…I would actually like some more Police on the list, Message in Bottle or Don’t Stand So Close to Me…

That’s a good suggestion. I’m a little bit afraid of it and haven’t tried it yet, but as you said: the fretless sound is very intoxicating. So I’m definitely going to have one. Maybe not too soon because I feel that I should become even more familiar with the notes on the fretted bass before going to fretless. Thanks for your insights.

Yeah, I think you even look a little bit like him. :face_with_monocle:

Well done. :flexed_biceps:

Yep, you’ll need to talk to my agent, @TheMadBassist, he’s organising the US Tour

The likeness is quite startling … in a dark room, with a broken bulb, and the glasses left somewhere in the car

Thank you! We do play a lot of Pretenders haha. We were originally going to be a Pretenders and Clash cover band but shifted to a general 80’s and 90’s alternative cover band.

Soundgarden - The Day I Tried to Live

Finally got around to doing this one. It’s not a technically demanding song by any stretch, but man… it’s a whole headspace to sit in when you really start to digest those lyrics. That slow churn from numb to alive and back again, that push against your own momentum, waking up and getting after it day after day trying to create change against the constant BS the world throws your way…Whoops — not trying to turn this into a therapy post. Let’s just say music and playing bass have been a wonderful outlet as of late.

Anyway, if you’ve ever let yourself get the best of you and tried to claw your way back to “baseline,” (bass-line?) only to find the same weight waiting — this one’s for you.

As always, open to thoughts, ideas, comments on tone, style, whatever!

Well, the next few tracks are going to take a bit of prep work so I thought I would fill in with an ‘interpretation’ of Rock and Roll. I say ‘interpretation’ because while the notes are the same as the original, they are mostly in a different order  . Still, I think this keeps with the spirit of the original, even though playing like this may well get me kicked out of a Zeppelin tribute band…

I swapped over for the Thunderbird with rounds - apparently JPJ switched to using rounds after Led Zeppelin 2, albeit with a Jazz bass, so great minds think alike

Oh you might notice I’m playing one fret up. I tuned down a half step a while back and just prefer the tone with the slightly slacker strings .
