Well, it kind of is. My upbringing absolutely prohibits me from using it. I have never said it out loud and I even have trouble thinking it.
Because my park punk girl (akak G.GOERE) uses it for herself and her next track is dominated by that word, we had a whole discussion about that. This is how I found that article … in a highly regarded publication, at least in the leftist scene.
For her it’s about reclaiming a bad/denigrating word that was used by men to describe/call on women.
The logic: using it yourself & for yourself magically changes the negative connotation.
But I really don’t know if it works that way. Men will still think (and act) the same. It’s very much like the N-word discussion, in a way.
Also, when I was her age, we were “language dandies”, so our goal was that everything we said could be printed and get a Nobel Prize in literature
We wanted to be like Kant (the philosopher) not the word that rimes with it….
I find, using words like that does not empower at all … and surely is a loss in terms of class and style. You are what you say (and how you say it).
I think in part it is. But it only works when the girls use the word between themselves. If a man would say it even meaning well, it would be understood in a very negative way.
I had the same thought. But, funny story: when I met the park punks first, I was asked twice what gender I identify. First time I said: “Male, of course!”, and it felt like I just hailed a well known German leader 1933-1945.
So the next time I said: “Sorry, I’m an old white man, so I identify happily as a man. I’m really sorry!!!”
But with all that gender fluidity, it’s hard to know who is what and when to be allowed to use certain words or not. How much female must you be (or feel like) to be allowed to use that word? So, if I feel 20% woman - can I use the word? Being a 100% man (don’t tell anybody), its a non-issue for me, but still…
I have nothing against people identifying as whatever they want to be. But it makes communication hard sometimes, like in this case…
I agree and I can say the same. Anyone can identify themselves as whatever they want, and it shouldn’t be anyone’s business.
Fortunately in Finland language is pretty much gender neutral. So instead of she or he, there’s “hän” or “se” - “se” actually means “it” but in spoken language we use “se” instead of “hän”. But often people call their pets as hän (she, he) and people as se (it). As you can see, it is very simple!
Being 50 years old, and having a different upbringing than the youth of today, it feels kind of funny when someone refers to someone as a “supposedly male person”. But especially younger people might feel offended if someone makes assumptions about their gender.
Thanks man! Every time I play it, I realize I’ve forgotten how much I like it.
Thanks Jerry! Yeah, this song is older than I am, coming from the band Five Man Electrical Band in 1970. I didn’t discover it until 20 years later, when Tesla covered it on their Five Man Acoustical Jam album. Those would have been prime anti-authoritarian days for me, so this song rang a serious chord!
That was great! Such a fun song too. I tried playing this early on - way before I was ready for it - and I couldn’t keep the tempo up so abandoned it. Might need to revisit it!. Impressive that you can do so playing fingerstyle! As I mentioned on YT, I bet that’s a workout!
Yes, this is true - but they should also not turning it into other people’s business, while in reality, they constantly bother others with their very own identity issues. And I can very well understand that very old people, like people in their eighties or so, are unable to understand that gender hype that’s going on nowadays.
Thanks @fennario! Re: chugging pace, this song is at 148bmp, so well with in my comfort zone. I good up to about 160’ish BPM (think, Kids in America, the Faster parts of Common People). Much over that, it tends to fall apart. For example, Ever Fallen In Love is at 176bpm, I need a pick for that one
I’d say, have another go at it!!
thanks, @TheMaartian! Ah, Lee Sklar, what a dude!!
