Well played, @groaner. I particularly liked the BassBuzz product placement ![]()
Well played, @THRILLHO, and thanks for the backstory on the band, very interesting! Oh, welcome to the thread too!

Taylor Swift - Style (Taylor’s Version)
I found the process of recording this quite interesting. The original line is super-simple (5 notes) and is played on a keyboard. To get the tone I wanted, I actually recorded 4 bass lines, two were picked 8ths, which I planned just left and right of centre. These give driving rhythm, especially as I made sure I was a bit ‘percussive’ in my playing. I then recorded two very simple lines, whole notes, to give some depth. These were again planned left and right. I quite like the outcome. What do you think?
Dingwall Combustion into GarageBand, via the Hotone Ampero, with no amp or cab sim engaged, just compression.
Oh, and regarding Taylor Swift, as my punk loving cousin said this morning, “Yeah, but I really like Taylor!” So any Taylor detractors, just run along ![]()
Supercool song!
Sounds great, very well mixed.
What’s the difference between recording two tracks paned right and left vs. one track in the center?
You get a natural chorus effect. If you record the line twice, even if you think you’re playing exactly the same notes at the same time, there are going to be differences. If you then slightly separate the tracks (left / right), it makes the line sound ‘fuller’. You can get a similar effect if you just copy-paste a single track, then shift one back slightly, so that it sounds a fraction of a second after the first. The trouble with this method is that the delay between the two tracks is constant, whereas a delta between two played tracks will change, adding a bit of movement into the chorus effect.
Thanks.
I’ll experiment with this a bit. Never tried it before.
That’s got a cool groove…I like that little fill at 1:43. Serious fretting hand workout. Welcome to “Post your covers!”.
Happy to see some new people on this thread! Great job! Nice video editing…that was entertaining.
Nice one, Duncan! That is interesting how you layered the different tracks…sounds great!
Not familiar with this song, but I really dug it. Great job.
This technique can be successful but is not without downsides for bass if you get it wrong i.e. ‘fuller’ can also sound ‘blurry’ or ‘mushy’ especially for low frequencies, so if you want a tight bass sound you are working against yourself
recording the same line multiple times can also lead to a phasing effect in places where you do manage to play the same note very close to the same time, which can sound ‘exciting’ to the ears at higher freqs but can sound weird at low freqs (either causing a surging sound or a hollow sound depending on whether freqs are canceled or reinforced)… @sunDOG ‘s advice about panning can help with this but again if you want a tight sound this technique may not be for you, and EQ adjustments may be more suitable to get to the sound you want
note: this isn’t a comment on @sunDOG cover just a general comment about multi-tracking bass instruments
leaving aside my comments above, you sound good as usual @sunDOG …I mostly hear the 8ths, but it would be interesting to hear a mix without the whole notes to compare the tone you get
I’ve played around with it in a fwe different forms. What I’ve settled on, is to record everything in stereo, EQing and panning both signals slightly differently. My left signal will have a bit more low end and the panning set between 5 - 10 to the left. From what I understand, most music that we listen to is mastered for more of the bass to come from the left side so I went with that. I tend to boost mids on my right signal to help cut through the mix and pan it 5 - 10 to the right.
This gives me some of that “fuller” sound without the blurriness or mushiness. Not that Duncan’s ever sound like that, but I can hear it in my basement when I’m trying different things out.
the important thing in mixing or mastering bass is ‘monoing the mix’ (i.e. checking what your stereo mix will sound like when monoed) due to the possible effects I described above to make sure nothing goes weird when in mono
these days people push the boat out a bit more, but the traditional position for bass in a mix is straight down the middle (i.e. mono)…this is because bass freqs are so powerful it is safer to have both speakers taking the load equally on playback rather than loading to one side (same for bass drum) = this will give the loudest clearest possible playback potential for the mix
e.g. traditional positions in a stereo mix
That’s metal to me. My kinda metal… Well done.
Thats an awesome pic, thank you. I’ll give this a try, I’ve got a couple of songs that I’m working on that are a.) close to being ready to record and b.) ones that I actually want to record.
I don’t pan it a lot, the 5 - 10 I was talking about is in garageband or Logic. Those would be the 11 or 1 positions if they were a clock. Plus, it’s both the bass signal so it is going equally through both speakers. It’s more about having the signals EQ’d a bit differently.
Hi,
New +44 cover with female vocal.
@sunDOG I recommend this song especially to you, because I saw that you play with a female singer!
+44 - Make You Smile
Hey all, I’ve got a lot of catching up to do on this thread, but looking forward to doing it! Here’s some feel good 90s nostalgia for your Sunday morning, thanks for checking it out.
Nice job! Enjoyed that one!
That was great, Dan! A feel-good 90’s tune. As I wrote on your YT page, I like that bass sequence leading into the verse throughout the song. Diggin’ your song selection as usual! Well played!
Diamond Rio - Norma Jean Riley
Following Dan’s lead, I’m going to keep the 90’s feel good music going…
Very Nice work!
One thing that I didn’t mention was that after watching Peacemaker, I really got back into 80’s Sunset Strip type rock. The soundtrack is awesome. I love superhero stuff, and I love a good comedy, so this hits the spot. The only crime series I got into was Dexter, and we have watched them all, so I needed something to fill that hole!
My son bought Peacemaker series 1&2 on Amazon, it was great to watch series 1 again, and I look forward to series 2 ![]()
