Hello Friends!
My attempt to cover Smooth Operator by Sade —shout-out to bassist Paul Denman!
Such a fun song to play. Hope you enjoy.
Cheers!
Very well done! Great job
@thinktriplets Nicely played!
Thanks @John_E !
Thanks @Rob5589 !
I enjoyed this deep dive (and this song in particular) a lot, never listened to the album before, but now a fan. Great work rookie!
Well played, Travis! This song has a great bass line!
@Ek_Bass, well done on your covers!
Well played, @thinktriplets. This is an iconic line!!
K.Flay - This Baby Don’t Cry
This will be my last cover for 2025 - hasn’t the year flown by?! I’d never heard of K.Flay until a few days ago, when this song randomly came on my iTunes - I freakin’ loved the bass line!
Parental discretion required regarding some of the lyrics!
I’m playing my Hohner Professional B Bass, via th Ampero, into GarageBand, where I doubled the track and added a bit of distortion to one of them.
Nice work!!!
Thanks man!
Yeah buddy gain staging is my arch-nemesis and I’ve yet to find any one-size-fits-all (or even most) approach to the right amount of distortion vs volume.
I keep getting tripped up making small changes early in the chain that seem to multiply and smear the tone down the line. It’s like I’ll get my DI setup, bus it, put on “a touch” of distortion and suddenly that same input is absolutely smashing the plugin and I’m clipping like mad. Add an amp + cab sim, EQ, compressor, it just turns into the world’s worst domino game. I’ve leaned more conservatively in recent recordings with some favor towards coming in a little quieter because I’ve borne witness to my audio getting trashed when I “just turn the bass up” and forsake appropriate gain staging -

- I showed previous versions of this to my dad, who, while being a musician, has minimal knowledge of recording, and he was “I can’t hear the bass, just turn it up” and alas the fader for the bass track was at +3 on the final product- you could definitely hear it, but you could also hear it getting repeatedly smashed by the compressor and limiter

Nice job as always, @sunDOG
However, I would like to challenge you a bit…
A lot of your covers are of simpler tunes that are easily mastered by someone with your skills. And as the intention of this thread is to be a learning / feeback / critique / grow, there really isn’t much in these type of tunes to foster that discussion, or for you (or others) to learn.
Perhaps consider posting more challenging tunes that you may be working on in this thread, and simply add the ‘basic stuff’ to your video index page?
I think steering this thread back to its original intention would be more beneficial to the newcomers (and old comers for that matter). FYI - I have thrown this challenge to others in the forum as well, please don’t take personally or feel like you are being singled out.
edit: sheesh, I forgot the dang link ![]()
Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
Last one for the year and seemed like a good thematic fit for the feelings people tend to experience around this season.
The first time I ever heard this song, I was a wee lad of maybe 7-8 - it was played in the outro of a Simpsons episode, “Lisa’s Sax” and, of course that sexy sax line hooked me instantly. This was a long time before someone could grab their cell phone and Shazam a couple seconds from a tune, and even predated being able to “just google it” well the tune definitely stuck with me, and eventually, I was able to find it and enjoy it on my own terms (thanks, Limewire). 20 some years later here we are playing and sharing it with my BassBuzz fam!
I used BassCoverPete’s version of this tune to learn it, and went with the five string because, well if a song can be played on four strings, five is obviously the responsible choice. For some reason I cannot for the life of me refrain from a little added flourish when hitting that D chord ![]()
This is also the first recording I’ve done since lowering my action on the TRBX305, a decision I do not at this point regret. Per usual recorded using the Scarlett Solo into Logic Pro X. I acquired NeuralDSP’s DarkGlass Ultra plugin during their Black Friday sale and haven’t used it in any recording lately, so I managed to wedge it in on this one to give the bass a bit more teeth than the original. Amp simulation was achieved using Amplitube’s SXV-15N. As far as EQ, I dropped the low mids, slight bump of the high mids, and added a bit around 1.5k. Some gentle compression on the main track and a bit of reverb on a separate bus to keep things in line without making it scream “LISTEN ITS A BASS COVER!!”
anyway, enough of that, back to putting my house together after the holidays. I hope you all enjoy! As always, happy to take on suggestions/feedback.
Enjoy your New Year BassBuzz fam!
Geez man, guess that shows where my heads at today lol thanks!
overall pretty good.
There is something going on at 1:40ish that just doesn’t belong, maybe the version you used? It is really conflicting with your bass line. I like your tone, some timing issues throughout but generally a good job. This tune is harder than one thinks on bass. I like to play the sax solo to annoy my wife from time to time, lol.
I know I haven’t posted here much in the past year, but you couldn’t have said it much better @John_E…. This “Bass Covers” thread was a great tool for when I was a new bass player and helped me tremendously in my growth as a bass player.
If I could take it even one step further - and not to step on anyone’s toes - I would suggest also moving back into true “Bass” covers that highlight the bass lines and skill level of the cover song. Personally, I only visit the Bass Covers thread to actually listen to “Bass Covers”, -not- “Band/Gig” songs…. Although I don’t mind them every now and then,….. I usually get my fill of ‘em while making noise with my “overaged, overweight, grey (or bald) headed, blue pill popping, blind, deaf, memory lacking” band of misfits and miscreants.
