Nice on all @faydout!! Folsom Prison Blues can be a tough one when it comes to tone…. Probably why it might be part of the 50 song challenge?? Not sure if it is or not… Notes are all simple enough with a 1-4-1-5 in E, but the real challenge is more into how the notes are played, and it can be challenging to emulate that classic deep double bass tone and resonance that carries the tune. Just a suggestion, you might try playing the bass line using the first position (open E) which will require a different muting technique since you would also be playing the A open also - but these two open notes can provide great tones in the song if properly executed. The alternative would be to detune to flat (Eb, Ab, Db, Gb) and adjusting where you play 1st level accordingly (first fret E instead of open). Although this would work well, I do believe that the song is challenging in controlling the tones of open strings. Sorry for the long post, and good luck!!

Thanks…I appreciate that!

Yeah, I love that song…that album starts off with some quick bangers - Cinnamon Girl (3 min) and then this song (2 min and change) - before they get to the looooong jams - Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. One of my favorite albums.

@AndreaJayne, @TheMadBassist and @JerryP Thanks for taking the time to listen to it!

Just listened to the faydout 3-song set over lunch. Well done! You’ve got nice timing. To me the tone in Folsom Prison Blues that sounded tinny was the C-note on the G-string. That said, you played the song really well. Enjoyed listening to all 3 songs!

Yeah, Bill! That was cool. I like the bass line in the chorus (almost has a disco feel to it). And that slap part was a surprise to me as I didn’t remember that song had that element to it.

Thank you, that’s brilliant. It hadn’t occurred to me that the song was probably recorded on a double bass, and that would explain why I wasn’t ever really happy with the sound.

I’ve got I’m so lonesome I could cry by Hank Williams Sr. coming up and I think I’m going to try some of your suggestions out on that. It’s probably going to have the same issues.

Love this tune, one of those ‘grew up with it’ tunes… Great job!

Another classic country song…. I remember playing that one on stage in around 1964 when my music teacher entered me into the Illinois State music competition for classic guitar. There are a lot of tricks to use to get as close as possible to the tones of a double bass on an electric that many of the posters here on this thread have tried with some decent results such as: using flatwound or nylon strings; sponge under the strings at the bridge; playing farther up the neck where the neck meets the body of the bass; and of course tone knob adjustments. Good Luck!!

Keep on Thumpin’!

Thanks. Guess he stole a few disco lines back in 1979.

I’ve never been a big fan of this song but it’s a god bit of fun to play. Imo, boost the bass a bit and dance while you play. The bassline itself is simple.

I kinda love how this one came out. This was the palette cleanse I needed from the past week of getting the 50 song challenge ones ready to roll. I did this one on the Reverend Triad with my Keeley comp, GX-10 set on my clean bass patch, gain at 60, bass and treble at 50 mids at 60 with some hall reverb and delay set at about 300ms.

Nicely done @faydout !

Lovely tune, Top job, it could have been easy (and tempting) to overwhelm the rest of the track, but it sounded just right.
Good to have a break from the 50 songs and play something of your own choice.
I have ‘homework’ to do before I carry on to Song 3. EDIT, song 2! I forgot that i did a couple out of order first!

My first cover of the year (not counting the one posted in the practice fragments the other day :slightly_smiling_face:)
Volcano Girls by Veruca Salt…such a great tune and is very fun to play…it was produced by Bob Rock and I really like the vocals and massive girl power rock vibe it has

Wasn’t expecting to get this done first take so I was more relaxed than usual playing on camera…it wasn’t perfect but considering I pulled off a head nod with my cat Jelly while playing I had to use it
