Yep, shoegaze is my thing (I’m a big post-punk and post-hardcore fan too). I’ve done a bunch of them. MBV, a few Slowdive songs, Lush, Tamaryn, some Cocteau Twins. I’m hoping to get another Lush song recorded this weekend. Then I’ve got another MBV song and a Drop Nineteens song coming soon. Longer term, I’ve got a Spiritualized song brewing.

This is a fun and deceptively difficult one to play. A lot of muting, including open string muting (shakes fist) and slides and it all comes quick. I didn’t hit it perfectly but it’s close enough for government work.
I wanted to do one of the Cure’s happier songs. Most people focus on the depressing ones all the time but they’ve got some really fun and danceable songs, including this one.

Great sound from that acoustic bass, @EverC, well played! Did you breathe at all through that take? I think one of the tricks is to try to relax a little and flow with the groove of the song…of course, when I try to do this and I then fluff notes as I’m not concentrating on what I am doing

The bass sounded perfect in this, @faydout, well played!! Interesting you are using a very light pick. My preference is for a 0.7 / 0.71 / medium. I find that bit of give really helpful.

Well played, @BassyBunch. Sometimes the timing seemed a fraction out, but without a drum track to lock into, timing can become a challenge. My approach for these kinds of song is either to move to an imaginary drum beat, or, whisper it, generate a click track (Moises can do this). Great tone!!

The bass sounds surprisingly good. The only issue with it is that resting a thump on the pickup can get a bit painful after a time - something I need to sort (either technique, or a mechanical intervention…)
The D-Roc freakin’ rocks. If I could only keep one bass, the D-Roc would be it! The Boss pedal is also fan-freakin-tastic!!
I do like experiments in sound, @AndreaJayne! Dakota is now back on the set list for our next gig

P!nk - Who Knew (Acoustic)
This is an acoustic version of P!nk’s Who Knew. Yes, I know I posted a cover of the studio version a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve been practicing my palm muted, pick technique and I thought it fitted the song. It’s also a song the band’s vocalist wants us to play, so this is another experiment in sound. I do open the sound up at about 2min 30secs, trying to pull the song towards a denouement, before dampening the strings back down for the outro. I also fluff one note and feel I drag in a couple of places…but we’re all our own worst critics

This is my favourite song of all time. I never get bored of listening to it. It’s the first song that I have played that I have really connected to. So excuse any mistakes as I was lost in the song.

If you know anyone with a 3d printer, this might be a decent choice. Been thinking of printing one myself.
The bass is a Squier version of a 51 p bass with a tele-type single coil pick-up. It has a rounded shape.
I have tried a ‘thumb fin’ - expensive and actually too big & chunky. I did use a Bic Biro, taped to it, but it kept falling off! I must get around to creating a more long term solution…
Thanks Duncan, I use either a .7 or 1.0 pick most of the time. Playing something like Husker Du, I’ll go heavier with a 1.5mm. I found with the way that song needed to be played, that the extra give helped to even out the tone. Playing with a stiffer plectrum, I’d come in right after the first chorus picking too hard and it would sound to harsh for the first couple of notes. I’m doing a Bloc Party song right now that’s kinda the opposite. It’s a really quick tempo (165 bpm) that requires precise timing. I’m using a stiff .7 pick with a sharp point to give me the precision and speed that I need to play it.

Just looked it up, those do look chunky! And not great if you want to keep the “thumb on the pickup” position either.
I’ve got a Squier P so I’ll probably print up that model I linked at some point soon, there are other printable bass thumb rests if you search on that site I linked though. Including copies of the official Fender one, meant to screw into place but I’m sure some good double-sided tape would be enough for at least a test.
