Muse - Stockholm Syndrome
Alright, so this one’s a second shot at one of the very first videos I posted here & on YouTube. There’s something to be said for that “youthful ignorance” coming with tackling a song like this - 16ths through the verses @ 128bpm is a whole different ballgame than I’m used to (especially if you look at my last several covers - all significantly slower, but that’s WHY we did this).
I’d be remiss attempting to argue that this is necessarily “harder” than “Hysteria” (it is, per my understanding, faster, but mostly single note, whereas Hysteria’s phrasing is more mobile and the chorus involves string switching) but I’d definitely put them on the same playing field.
Usual parallel bus setup in Logic Pro X for this one. I used Amplitube’s AD200 sim into the OBC 8x10, with the SVX-OCT(aver) pedal for the choruses. Parallax on my Presence bus isolated to high mids (~700hz) with a good amount of drive. Touch of parallel compression to keep the attack density consistent throughout along with some EQ refinements on the backing track and bass sum busses to ensure my part remained audible throughout.
Video was pretty fun and surprisingly easy to produce - per yoosh, my single-take iPhone on a tripod in my bedroom was utilized. Once I found the right LUT to emulate the original music video’s “heat-seeking-missile-chaos” vibes, and decided to go fully feral with some color adjustments, this one was actually pretty simple.
Would love to hear any comparison/critique between the OG version and this one from some of my fellow bass-heads!

I was working on Halo for a while and gained a whole new respect for their bass player. Dude is an unsung hero.

I’m working on This Modern Love. I’m not having any issues with the speed. I need to get the bit after verse 3 (the jump up to the 12th fret) memorized well enough to not need to think about what I’m playing or what’s coming. I want to get it recorded next weekend so I’ve got another week to get that down.
Halo looks pretty similar. There’s more moving around the fretboard, which gets dicey at that pace. The whole band plays tight and in sync with each other so well that if you’re trying to get a cover down, the timing needs to be spot on or the mistake is going to stick out.

Halo’s bassline is also syncopated a little in an interesting way. It’s not complicated but it moves around a lot and not right at the measure. It’s super cool and fun but relentless.
You doing the guitar part of TML too? With it the bass octaves would get me but I realized those might be guitar.

Absolutely not. There’s enough going on with the bassline. I’m not trying to turn 8th notes at 165 bpm into octave 16th notes. If I could pull that off, I’d be looking to quit my day job and go on tour with someone.

I just tried it at half speed and I couldn’t even nail that. That said, octaves like that are my kryptonite - my left hand hates them.

@EverC I haven’t done covers myself, but I was told it sometimes takes a lot of practice, and for many people it isn’t easy to record the whole song in one go without mistakes. So this is great for an attempt number three. Just keep practicing and it will get better! And about making a mistake: yesterday I was watching a video of a live concert by The Cure in 2024, and during the song Secrets, the keyboardist Roger O’Donnell accidentally played the wrong note. He tuned to the camera, cringed and smiled, and kept playing. This kind of thing can happen to professionals even when they have played a song a thousand times. So, no worries!

I’m in Indiana with my son for the weekend and we’re back at it. I only wanted to record a couple of covers for the challenge yesterday, but the acoustic was so much fun to play that I added a few more. We ended up 5 for the day! 
I’ve known these songs pretty much my entire adult life, so it wasn’t too much of a stretch to play them on the fly.
I’m 52 - Nirvana’s version of Lake of Fire is iconic for my generation. lol
