Well done again.

all this gets easier the more comfortable you get and more you practice. Playing with a pick is actually fun as hell once you get in the zone.

4 Non Blonds - What’s Up bass improvisation

Another Blackstar Carry-on bass cover, this time the 4 Non Blonds song, What’s Up?

This is one we are playing in the band. I had a bit of trouble finding my way into the song as I find it pretty dull to play…!

Keeping the party going…

Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl (Bass cover)

This song was on the setlist for my very first open mic night. I had 1 day to prep 3 songs so I played a simplified version of this song that night. I thought it was finally time to tackle it properly. A very fun song to play. It’s full of walk ups - sometimes even walking up to the walk up.

I know I often appear very focused while playing, but I’m trying to look up from the fretboard more often. There’s a moment where my wife walks in the door and I get all smiley - she didn’t know I was recording. I need one of those On Air signs.

Looks like you’re having an awesome time playing the song. Great job!

I assume by improvisation you mean you’re creating your own bass line from the chord sheet and adding fills and flair as desired. If so, then I’m so glad you posted this. It’s validation for me that I’m on track when playing with others as I don’t always play the official bass line.

I refer to a simplified version of Brown Eyed Girl in the post above. I guess I mean improvisation as well - not following standard notation or a tab.

There’s so much to learn and I’m still a n00b in many, many areas! Thank you for posting this video. :slightly_smiling_face:

Well played! Whatever you added was all tasteful and sounded natural to the song. Interesting bass, by the way!

Hey there, everyone! I’ve been playing a lot of gigs lately, which has been fun and exhausting. Here is my band playing “Candy” by Iggy Pop.

As I wrote on your YT page, I like the bass line right before “…and I live by the river!”. That Fender has a nice tone. And cool work once again with the green screen.

Yeah, Jerry! Definitely looks like a fun one to play!

Nice fat tone on that cover! I always like when the bass playing continues after the backing track ends. Appreciate you opening up about your experience with the girl at university. I think it’s important that you just continue being authentic and sharing your true self with others. That is the only way to meet someone that likes you for you. And what you mentioned about putting work into becoming more harmonious and trustworthy reminds me of that saying “if you chase butterflies, they fly away. If you make a beautiful garden, the butterflies will come to you.”

As I wrote on your YT page, you’re looking comfortable with the pic! The Beatles project was a really fun idea to stay motivated using the pic. Well done!

That is cool you’re playing in a trio!…and it’s always nice to have a few easier songs thrown in the mix when you’re jamming or playing live so that you can feel relaxed and especially when you’re keeping a whole host of songs fresh.

Between you and Professor, I am going to have to start catching up with covers 2 a week instead of once a week! Nice job with the alternate picking. I don’t know about the jerseys, but I think I saw you wearing a Turkey kit in the last one.

That Blackstar gets a nice tone. As I wrote on your YT page, I think the most interesting part of the bass in your cover of that song are those little entries into the pre-chorus and the chorus.

Well done! Hope you enjoyed the open mic!

Awesome job, Beau! You look super comfortable playing live!

Exactly that, @Professor. It rather depends on the song and the context. For something like, say, Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust, you have to play the line as played by John Deacon, three on the E, then the rest of the line; the bass line is the song. But for many others, most of the time, especially in the band context, I look to get approximately there and then make sure I nail the groove. An example of this is No Doubt’s Just A Girl. I think it’s either played on a 5-string, or in drop D on a 4-string. Either way, the D that is played is an octave lower than on my 4-string basses. I don’t want to drop tune in the middle of a set, and I don’t really want to have a second bass for one or two songs, so I simply play the D on the 5th fret of the A-string. To me it sounds ok, but it’s not per the studio track. For some songs, I might simplify a bit. For others, like Bad Moon Rising, I’ll put a fill in at the end of every four bars. The song is so boring to play, if I don’t, I lose where I am  !!

Thanks, @beaurapp! The Blackstar has no right sounding so good! It only cost me £80!!

Thanks, John! Yep, the Blackstar sounds surprisingly good. I also liked those fills, simple but effective, I thought.

Thank you, @JohnF!

I love music, I love to play and I love to learn new things. This hobby has so many avenues to explore and this forum is so supportive when I have questions.

But the real joy is the collab with my son. We’ve tried so many things over the years and nothing has been close to matching the excitement and engagement we’ve shared over the last 3+ months. We’ve gone from that looks cool, can I help? to coming up with ideas for our video shoots, recording from remote locations, maintaining a shared spreadsheet to capture all the details surrounding the recorded songs, expanding capabilities using chroma key, blur, multicam, etc., transcribing songs by ear, and now we’re building a web app to replace the spreadsheet together.

This community has been a part of our journey by generating ideas, answering questions and providing feedback and I’m truly grateful. :slightly_smiling_face:

Man! I wish it was that easy!!

I don’t think I ever posted in the Introduction thread…

I started playing the bass by a happy accident. I was at my son’s winter jazz band concert and the director made an open call for someone to play bass. My son plays trombone and I thought it might be a good fit. So, I bought a bass and amp for him to mess around with. The stuff arrives a few days later and I can’t resist - I unbox everything. It’s a red Yamaha TRBX174 and a Fender Rumble 40. I think it’s really cool so I decide I’ll learn to play at the same time. I signed up for B2B that day and went through the first 2 modules. I played until my fingers were burned.

By the time I get my son for the holiday break, I’ve already exchanged the TRBX174 for a red TRBX304. He tries it out for a few days, but says it’s too heavy. I get it - he’s 12 back then.

Now I already know I want to play the bass and I finish my first run through B2B 18 days after I started. I ask him if he would rather try guitar since it’s smaller. He says yeah, so I get him a Squier CV Strat in LPB. (yes, that is our corner of the family room before it became the recording area.)

We try the guitar and we hop around from course to course for a few weeks. Unfortunately, he never had that moment that hooked him.

Fast forward to summer break. He’s with me down in Florida. My wife has an E drum kit and he thought it would be cool to try that. She shows him a few things to start out and we get him going with an online course. He lost interest after a few days.

So that’s how I’ve ended up where I am today. And it’s why I’m so happy that he’s interested in the video production aspect of things. We’ll see where this goes. I’d love to eventually play music with him, but I’m content with what we have.
