So I thought I’d have another crack at this great soul song. It was a pain trying to get the tone and sustain I wanted for it, but I’m reasonably happy with the results! This is “Will I See You Again?” by Thee Sacred Souls. The great Sal Samano plays bass for them.
Really nice melodic bassline, covered very well! First time I’ve heard this song. I like it. I had to look up the discography for Thee Sacred Souls. A modern band with a soulful ‘60s vibe. From San Diego, no less. Worth checking out, so I made an Amazon Music playlist of their 3 albums (one is instrumental) and 1 EP (Audiotree performance).
Thank you so much! They’re a great band! I ended up on a Soul kick a couple years ago and discovered all these new acts coming on the scene and Thee Sacred Souls was frequently mentioned online as one to check out.
I saw them live a year and a half ago or so and they sounded just as good live.
There is so much to learn from Soul music when it comes to bass, so I find myself coming back to it frequently.
My new bass cover: “Still got the blues” by Gary Moore. I’m not sure if I actually feel the blues yet , but I definitely had fun playing it. What do you think?
P.S. Don’t mind my shaking hands, I still get very nervous in front of camera.
I think you did a fantastic job! Tone, timing & precision - you’ve got it covered. And a great song choice
I’ve recorded nearly 50 covers in the last 3 months and I still get a little anxious when the camera is rolling. I know it’s all in my mind so I try to channel that energy into something positive while I play.
I can say that it gets a lot easier to deal with the more you do it.
Nice job! Yeah, that song is perfect for practicing timing…nowhere to hide!
Enjoyed this one! Nice use of your ring and pinky fingers!
Well played, Justin! This song better be on your Thuder & Steel setlist!
I haven’t heard this band in a long time…well done!
Great job, dude! Love the commitment to the Beatles pic project!
Nice and steady! You got some fuzz on one of those notes in the riff. Not sure if that was intentional from the original recording.
Cool groove…really well played! Tone sounds niiiice.
Great job, Aleksandra! Cool song selection. Yeah, the camera changes the game. I tend to have my best take immediately after I already have a decent take recorded (that I would be comfortable posting) and the pressure is off. So, maybe give that a try…record 2 or 3 takes right after you already have a decent take recorded and in those subsequent takes you will feel 100% relaxed.
Yes, this one is from the 50 Songs Challenge list, and the official post is below.
However, there are a couple of things I want to point out. This is the debut of my Yamaha TRBX604. This bass is the direct successor to the bass I used for B2B. (I returned my TRBX174 for a TRBX304 - which I returned for the TRBX604) I’m surprised it took this long to record a cover with it.
Also, my son is with me in FL and we’re talking about how we want to setup the thumbnail and background during the rest periods. My wife says (she’s almost always right ) it’s distracting. I don’t see it though. When I’m playing, I’m playing. There’s nothing else to watch during the break and I’m pretty sure no one wants to focus on my dance moves.
My bass cover of the Jimi Hendrix classic “Foxy Lady” (often spelled “Foxey Lady” on US vinyl pressings). This track features a bass line played by Noel Redding. “Foxy Lady” was originally released in 1967 on the “Are You Experienced” album. While international pressings used the standard spelling, North American copies by Reprise Records famously (mis)spelled it “Foxey Lady.”
I do feel you are a bit lagging the beat and not driving it forward. The playing sounds a bit robotic as well, meaning the notes are all segregated into neat bits vs. a groove feel. The bass almost swings a bit in the original, with lots of “feel”. Hope I am describing it right.
