Post Your Covers! (2026)

Youse folks can play with fingernails? I gotta keep mine at less than surgical length. So >1mm. How do you do it? I get excess noise.

After trimming nails < 1mm, my “pluck pluck” sounds better.

Ok ok, it’s still sh**ty - but better nonetheless.

I can play with them, I just can’t stand them on me. Grrr-oss.

OK. I worked some on this.

Hell yeah! You can tell how comfortable you are in the last half of the song because you’re playing it with much more confidence. Sounds great!

We need to talk to the Cricket section, though - they’re a bit sharp.

And that’s how bad covers happen here at the nebraska local backyard boom.

I’m no arena rocker, I’ll never be a session guy. But I play what I want, when I want- and about half the time it sounds about half OK.

Thanks @JoshFossgreen !

That’s exactly where I’m at - There are no plans for my basses to leave my house. I just want to be able to hear a song I like and play it.

I seem to be on a Kinks roll. Here is my cover of their cover of the Kingsmen’s classic Louie, Louie. You can find the Kinks version on, among other albums, The Best of Louie, Louie, Vol. 2. I’ll admit to playing with the riff a bit; Kinks bassist Peter Quaife laid down a solid, never changing 1-2-3—1-2—1-2-3—1-2 (A-D-E-D) rhythm the entire song. This is also my first cover using the new Yamaha BB734A in active mode. Pickups are balanced, and mid is boosted about half way.

OK… This damn thread needs to be woke up a bit!! So… Maybe it’s time to have some fun and post a throwback to around the 2019-2020 Post Your Covers Thread for a “One of a Kind Cover” using none other than my $30… Gut Bucket Bass!! I’ll bet even @Al1885 don’t have one of these signature instruments in his Bass Arsenal!!

Link to the old archived thread is above… However, here’s a direct link to the cover video… Constant Sorrow - Gut Bucket Bass Cover

Have a good weekend all… Deer season for firearms opens here in Middle Georgia tomorrow morning and my wife and I have 12 tags each to fill before mid January so I’ll be busy out in the woods here on my property holding something other than a bass.

Keep on Thumpin’!

This one was probably my favourite cover I’ve done so far, Ran by Future Islands. William Cashion was one of my biggest inspirations when I decided to pick up bass and I’m really happy with how this turned out. Feedback more than welcome though, especially on the pickling technique!

And you played it well… I’m not a pick player (wish I was better at it though) so can’t comment on technique or such, but what I can see and hear, it was IMHO flawless. I would have liked to hear more of the original song in the mix, but although I couldn’t, I could easily see that your timing was spot on, and your relaxed style of play certainly shown through. I can totally tell that this was your “Favorite”… Great job!

Keep on Thumpin’!

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter bass improvisation

Once again, busy with work and life, inc. lots of travel over the past couple of weeks, plus this coming week.

@suemerry.trl told me that her band are covering this song at an upcoming open mic. It’s a great song and such fun to just groove on.

Clearly I’m playing my Sterling Ray34, through my Boss Me-90B into GarageBand via a Scarlett Solo.

The Ray34, maaaan, I love this bass!

@sunDOG Keep your improv covers coming! I love the reminder lesson that, as long as the original does not have an iconic bass line that the audience insists on hearing, solid root-fifth chord-following play definitely works as a great bass line for the music. There seems to be a bit of truth that Johnny missed his third bass lesson because of his gig.

Well done. Nicely played.

Cate Le Bon - That Moon

I think this is a beautiful song. I focused on feel rather than overthinking the notes. :ocean: It felt like a pulse…muting on the snare hits…letting the rhythm breathe. Hope you dig the song.

Great job, Craig! Well played and happy to see you’re enjoying playing the Kinks!

As I wrote on your YT page, I am super impressed. Very cool song. …and you wrote 25 songs over the past couple months?!

You definitely do a wide variety of songs…I think that is awesome…something catches you’re attention, play it!

Yes, you’re definitely on a roll. Well played! I would have turned up the bass in the mix on this one. It was too faint. That wasn’t an issue on your last two so you may want to keep that in mind for the next (Kinks) song!

Great pick work! Nice and steady rhythm…definitely your best cover so far! Nice job and cool song selection!

Duuuuude…as I wrote on your YT post, as soon as that intro started I was like LET’S GO!!! That was awesome! The tone was perfect and I always like how you continue playing when the backing track ends just to hear that pure bass tone. GREAT song selection!

Actually written over the past year or so, just put them all to music and got them out for distribution over the last two months… The one I did the cover on is due to drop this Monday on all online platforms… The only difference between what the song sounds like online is that when I mixed for distribution, the bass line is not as prevalent as it is in the bass cover… Now we can cover our own songs!!

@BackcountryBassist Yup, you are right. When I recorded the video I listened to it on my bass-boosting headset, and it sounded fine. then this morning I listened on the built in speakers on my MacBook, and darn, I could barely hear my bass. Also, if you go back to the original 60’s Kinks recordings, they had a mix that placed the bass very heavy right in front, impossible to ignore.

I recall photos of recording studios in the 70s that had not only the full monitor speakers for the sound engineer, but also a set of small stereo speakers and also a single small 8" oval speaker so the engineer could check how the music would sound in an automobile, stereo or dashboard speaker. (Tech note: If you put one of the old floating black ball car compasses on the dash, that speaker totally screwed up the direction information. I figured that out when a neighbor, an engineer for Collins Radio in Dallas, in 1975 asked for help in fixing his troublesome compass.)
