@sunDOG got me nostalgic for 11th grade dances again with his Get Off My Cloud improv, so I had to go for the same song. However not up for the speed of his 2006 live concert version, I went back to the original '65 release … more my speed. I realize I flubbed the intro a bit, but feel pretty good about the rest of the performance.

Great job, @CraigS ! Very relaxed and your pull-offs during the chorus were smooth.

The hat was everything.

Great song… And great work on all your covers @roddie… But I’m a fan of the old classics, and that P base was the perfect choice for that song… My wife har our tein boys a few months after that song was released… Nostalgia… It’s what I love about music… Thanks for the memory!

I’m with ya on that one @CraigS!.. Love the old release… Yea, a few timing mishaps and finger flubs, but the hat more than makes up for it all!! I love what you’re doing though, and showing the recording is a pretty cool thing to include on a cover - great addition!!

Knocked out another one - This was started and finished today!

Get Down On It - Kool & The Gang

  • I was going to use a P-bass to stay faithful, but the Ray34 ended up being perfect, especially with the original bass line gone
  • The Stingray felt WAY better in my hands today. Not sure what the other day was about.
  • Fretting hand was a lot more relaxed, mostly because I didn’t have to move it :joy:
  • Missed a couple of notes here and there. I also dragged down the second half of the bridge

Best Time by Helloween. From Helloween’s 2021’s self-titled album. Bassist on the original album was Markus Grosskopf.

Great rhythm on the chugging with those accents.

Pata Pata - Miriam Makeba

  • Had this one on an old K-tel album. Such a fun song to play and listen to.
  • Tried to maintain an even tone while staying in the pocket. Messed up a couple of times, especially near the end.
  • Mental stamina seems to be an issue, I get into my head as the song goes on, especially if I’m doing well, and one mistake will throw me for a couple of bars

Great job!

Which album? I collect K-Tel albums, have over 200

Thanks!

It was the one with Ray Stevens on it (half of them) :stuck_out_tongue: How does one collect 200 K-tel albums?!

We only had two and I wore those things out. They’re long gone, sadly.

There are a couple thousand in all across USA, Canada, Europe/UK & Australia.

I’ve got issues.

Dude, you put a smile on my face after the first few bars! Loved it! Timing, tone and precision were right on target…. Great cover..

From what I could hear, the tone was good, just too low in the mix for a bass cover…. At times the song masked your performance.

As for the mistakes you mention due to “mental stamina”, we all go through that. My only advice would be to quit focusing so intensely on getting each and every note so precisely perfect, and focus more on your own “feeling the music - the groove - the heart”…. Granted, you’re trying to replicate an original cover, and it’s a great way to learn someone else’s style, but man, you’re good and you should be defining your own style of bass play…. Maybe it’s time to “Play You” instead of playing someone else…. Then you won’t have to deal with that “Mental Stamina” thing….. just me rambling - time for me to shut up..

Nah man, that’s great advice and I really appreciate it! To your point, I’m trying to stay faithful to the originals in my covers for now to help me learn other styles while developing my own… but I am starting to play around a bit while learning new covers, so hopefully that comes in time.

Here’s me “playing me” (and surprising myself with a clean fill.)

You’re on your way!! And I do understand wanting to continue re-creating covers. Did my share and it does help build the chops… But there will come a time when you’ll want more - it’s the same feeling you get when you finish the b2b course - always wanting MORE!!
