Project Basses

I use this. Mine a bit smaller and double sided.

I have one of those and multiple Olfas, I think I could do this

Would have been convenient a while back because my Telecaster has a weird pickguard combo.

I have two japanese saws too, a long one and a smaller one. I’m not super fan of the long one, but the smaller one is really super useful to me. Currently I work on the carpentry in my kitchen, and this little japanese saw is the one I use for all the flush cuts.

just a note about flush cut saws: some saws are marketed as flush cut but are really just very flexible saws — i especially notice this on a lot of Japanese “flush cut” saws.

to clarify and without getting overly technical, saws have teeth that are “set” just slightly wider than the steel blade, usually with every other tooth alternating going slightly left or right, this is what does the cutting. true flush cut saws only have the teeth set to one side, so the bottom face of the saw that lays on the instrument does not have the teeth set below it, and should not mark up anything.

i have this veritas flush cut saw which is set correctly:

having said that, if you are cutting something flush that is protruding from a finished surface, i would recommend putting down a piece of yellow frog tape (which is very thin and will not leave any residue) around what you are cutting off so that no matter what you will not mark up the finish of the bass.

If you want an inexpensive (I have lots of Veritas stuff and it’s very nice) thin flexible pull saw I recommend the Made in Japan Vaughan ones. I’ve lots of these kicking around my workshop and they’re a good saw for the money (about 15$ US).

My new distraction. Body had the controls crushed into it. My buddy bought it that way with no bridge or electronics. He made the bridge as a concept but I think I’ll remake it. I like where he was going with it. GFS lipstick pickups are readily available and I have one in my tele bass so I know I’ll like the tone. Flats of course. And tort of some variety. The mother of toilet seat has to go. Considering some clever wiring options. Suggestions? Thoughts?

Refinish?

This is a BRILLIANT idea @Barney.
Every one of these I have ever seen looks like this one.
Would be really cool to do a refinish to something completely different.

Love it! Had one just like it. The finish is classic Danelectro. I definitely would not change a thing on it.

That’s a beauty!!

I dig the copper burst! A refinish is time and space I don’t currently have. Maybe I can get it rebuilt with the custom made bridge and get the electronics sorted out and see if my brain has any suggestions. With my new job starting in a few weeks I might actually have some time to myself. Refinish might be possible in the late fall. Now to find the right piece of tort…

Edit… maybe I could tort the whole top… :disguised_face::face_with_monocle:

Why stop there… tort the neck, tuners, and headstock too! :upside_down_face:

I was joking about the refin. This was my initial thought!

Well, the matching headstock would go without saying.

That’s why it’s at my house and not yours! It will live. It will be played.

There is room for a preamp in there…

I forgot to mention it would be nice if you swapped out the lipsticks for a couple of humbuckers

Is it just me or does the bridge look massively off-center?

Bridge currently only has the center screw in. Probably tilted. And I’m sure he got the string spacing wrong. Which is why I’m making a new one.

That’s a no.
