Project Basses

Absolutely fantabulous Mr. @jonathanhaynes43 . I’m blown away.

Well, this was disappointing :eyes:

TL;DR:

I’ll still probably try it with purple over black and see how it turns out, though I wish I had a scrap piece of mahogany laying around or could buy a small piece somewhere locally to try it on first…

Well. So far I am failing at my goal lol… I can’t quite get the effect with the unicorn spit I am after, though on its own it looks amazing as a purple. And the black looks great on its own. But I can’t make it work as a glaze despite its claims… I’ll keep practicing…

So when I get it all painted like a masterpiece, what do I do next?
I assume sand? If so what grit?
Matte lacquer on top (if I want a matte finish) or do I get a paint with a matte lacquer in it.

Sorry for dumb questions, I have no clue here.

1500 grit wet sandpaper will give you a satiny matte finish.

800 to 1000 will be more matte. 800 may be a bit coarse for a fine finish.

YMMV depending on the actual paint/topcoat.

I think I’m getting somewhere…

@jonathanhaynes43 I’m just going to toss my projects into a wood chipper now :tipping_hand_woman:t2:

I’m kidding, but excellent work

Edit Looking at how this True Black stain goes on over other finishes, I could probably just do it right over the SRC6’s “walnut” if I really wanted to. but I don’t :eyes:

Given all the “barnwood guitars” that are out there, and that everyone that hears/sees my DIY project asks if it’s barnwood, apparently I wasn’t as original as I thought since weathered fence boards are essentially “barnwood” in all but name only.

I might just use them for texture then and true black them out now :tipping_hand_woman:t2:

Michael’s had a $30 airbrush kit on clearance for $10

Really amazing stuff on this thread, I am blown away!

This is true happiness for me as well, as absolutely nothing I’ve posted as the OP on message boards since the days of BBSs (bulletin board systems, pre-internet) till now has received more than a few responses at most, so to see this way past 1000 posts :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Love you all!!

This Wes fellow reminds me of the late Pat Goss of “MotorWeek” on Maryland Public TV. Similar looks, similar delivery.

$65 to get knobs I know will fit this Mike Pope Flexcore preamp that will match my C-5 GT. Now it feels like I should sell it and buy a Darkglass Tone Capsule + knobs :joy:

nobody seems to carry the Ibanez parts I need, except European companies that charge an arm and a leg. I can’t bring myself to pull the trigger, but my C-5 looks ugly AF right now

Edit I might be in luck with Gotoh…

Gotoh hardware is super good, would be a preferential choice for me…

the problem I am having is that the concentric/stacked knobs are a different style :upside_down_face: beveled edge vs rounded dome like the other normal knobs… and I know the Ibanez ones fit perfectly because the preamp had Ibanez knobs on it before in Cosmo Black. And they all will match :eyes:

And the Gotoh stuff was still up around $45 anyway.

Yeah it’s not cheap.
