Yup…
What I was thinking was that it would have to be a really shallow angle and difficult to do without marring the finish behind it. A guard tube is a good idea. Looks like it’s not necessary to be as shallow as I was expecting.
Looks like a tune is eminent.
The helping hands soldering assistant is this (there are lots of alternatives). Makes life a little easier.
Oooh I like that one. I hate mine it’s not shaped right. Thanks for the upgrade tip!
That’s nice!. I used to have the Radio Shack Helping Hands with the bar and ball joints. This has more possibility.
Soldering has taught me to use my pinky and ring fingers as clamping chopsticks. That gives a total of four hold points with hands. Very useful.
Sorry @howard going with the original Black pick guard
The Vulcan tool grip. Live Long and Solder!
EDIT: I tried soldering like that once. As it turns out, soldering irons are HOT.
Looking pretty spiffy, @Barney .
Nice tool!
Bass is looking good. What color was it originally? I can’t remember.
Ha ha off white with a tort guard is my favorite!
Miami Teal is looking good too though! Good job!
That’s a wrap. Ibanez Talman TMB30 short scale bass refinish. Bought new for under $200 to start my Bass ‘journey’. I learned a lot and got the bass I wanted at the end. I’m not a pro by any stretch but if anyone’s contemplating a project like this I’d be happy to answer any questions I can. I was glad that I did this on an inexpensive bass as the pressure was off as far a ruining a nice instrument.
The one piece of advice I can give is patience. Things take as long as they take. If you’re in a hurry, it’ll bite you in the ass.
Stripped the Ivory Poly finish, sanded, sealed, pore fill, colour coats and clear coats all in nitrocellulose. Bought a complete kit from these guys. Very impressed with their product. Nitro paint - Seafoam Green
Replacement parts:
Tuners - Hipshot HB1
String Tree - Vintage Forge
Strap Buttons - Dunlop Straplock
Black pick guards screws - Solo Music
Bridge - Gotoh 201B
Black Jack / Volume plate - Solo Music
Ibanez headstock waterslide decal - Ebay
Old colour and hardware vs Upgrade
Yeah I know, that rug right?
Bass looks fantastic!!!
But (you’re right), the rug really brings the bass together.
So, would you do it all again? And if so why? Just to change color or for some other motive?
Thanks for posting that Helping Hands link @Barney ! With wiring work coming up on the Moolah Bass I’m probably going to need it.
Looks amazing Barney. Thanks for sharing your journey and rug.
