I had some Hipshot tuning machines from an old project so I installed them on my Paranormal. I have a Hipshot B style bridge on the way.
I’ll have to take pictures soon, but I already have a new project lined up…it’s a Leo Jaymz RB kit that I’m going to paint like Jimmy Olander of Diamond Rio’s Taxicaster guitar: yellow with a checkerboard pickguard. I’ll never be able to afford a real Rick, so I thought I’d buy a kit and go from there. I’m still undecided on whether to replace the pickups and bridge with something better, and I’m not sure what color to paint the neck and headstock. Any suggestions? The Moolah Bass is going to be done either this weekend or next. Pictures will be plentiful once I have Terry look it over.
My son, 13, has been playing bass about a year and a half. He’s helped me on a variety of cleanups, rebuilds, restrings and such from my instrument collection as well as for my buddies. He now wants to learn to solder and build something from scratch. I have a couple necks and stock parts (pickups, bridges, preamps, tuners) left over from upgrades and such he can use/have for the project.
He is going to make the body and then finish, test, blow it apart to paint it and hopefully have it complete by Christmas. Currently leaning towards a Meteora shaped body. Necks available are an old Memphis PBass neck or a Squier Jazz neck.
What would you build?!
A double P. Twice the fun
I’m not a big fan of J necks, but for a 13 yr old boy I would choose this thinner neck. the Meteora body shape seems perfect to me. about pickups, I’d say it depends what you have left … for me the basics is a P pickup and I don’t really need more (yeah I know, I don’t really have only a P … but that’s the basics). but if your son plays bass since a few times already, maybe he know what kind of pickups he prefers, and if he want an active or passive electronics ?
sounds like a nice project anyway !
He’s currently playing an Epiphone Embassy and a 90s Alvarez P/J. Both passive of course.
I’ve got pbass pickups, jbass, the humbucker and preamp left over from my red and carbon SUB Ray, and maybe some more I don’t remember. There are options!!
a double P could be a great idea, yeah !
Jazz bass project. Found a deal on a Fender MIM Roasted Maple Neck. Modern C, 9.5” radius. Gloss front, satin back.
Pic with standard Mexican maple neck to show colour comparison.
Body should arrive next week sometime.
And with that carpet tying things together? Wow!
How much of a deal is a deal?
Very nice find @Barney
Thanks @Barney, good things DO happen
he said dick flussig
Now that’s a nice neck.
I have to buy a Fender Stratocaster neck for my green Strat. I was thinking about a “normal” maple neck, but the roasted maple could be a serious challenger … I fear it looks too dark, but it’s not that much darker than the maple neck on your picture.
This is one of those ‘see before you buy’ the exact one.
They can be very dark to very light.
yeah but where I live, I have no chance to see one in person before I can buy it
edit : there is this one for sale, in France. not the cheapest but at least there are pictures of the actual neck. https://www.zikinf.com/annonces/annonce-2012110
Late night special.
So it’s 80% done. I’m still not 100% on the wiring since I want to do 18v through Sonar xPure with push/pull active passive on a 4 conductor wires pickup. It’s I bit more fancy than I’m used to so I just have to consult with my guy hopefully tomorrow at the same time place another order or maybe 2 because I have another sb4 already on deck and a natural OLP is coming on Wednesday.
The decal was not the correct one I ordered the seller is remaking another one with the 2 figures in front of the Sterling for me plus when I put it on I didn’t realize that the bottom of the “S” had flipped. I’ll fix that when it arrives next week.
Well here it is.
Looks great @Al1885
Lol that decal is so cursed and precious.
