I like the look and sound of the Dub.
My short scale hollowbody is my Epiphone Viola.
I have posted about how good it is before.
This is my go to bass.
I have deep talkin flats on it, it plays whatever style I want.
It feels great in the hands too, solid with a decent neck.
Warm Beatley tones but also has good bite- the two pickups give a lot of range.
I definitely recommend having a play with one if you are thinking of a bass in this direction
Currerently I use a hipshot tuner and play Drop D. That’s ok, but it’s not the real thing, of course.
And I am not “allowed” to have more than three basses/guitars, so I need to choose
Just had a look! No, the Duesenberg cannot be had cheaply here, unfortunately. That is one great looking bass too!
That would be the g2220, right?
No, the Electromatics. G5442BDC, etc. Beautiful instruments that sound great.
You should also check out Guild Starfires.
I would go with either of those over this specific Reverend.
Another fine example of the Reverend sounding saturated and muddy, very EB-like, IMO. YMMV but for me the Gretsch both looks and sounds a lot better.
I just wrote that guy an email, kindly asking him to remember what he thought about both eight years ago
Ok, the video guy answered me. He is a well known Bass Instructor here in Germany (didn’t know him, but he is a very friendly guy: https://www.nicobrandenburg.com/gear/).
This is what he says: "I still remember the Dub King. I even had it at my house because I wanted to buy it.
For some reason I decided otherwise (probably too many basses in the closet)
I definitely thought the bass was very cool in terms of concept, sound, look etc.
What was also great was that it has 19 mm string spacing. Most shortys are 18mm or less.
However, it didn’t sound like a typical short scale (old school á la Mustang…), as the MM style PU are very punchy. So much more modern.
It was also quite heavy for a short scale. (around 4 kg).
But all of this is without guarantee, as the test was about 12 years ago.
In any case, it left an impression, so much so that I recently took another look at it (but to no avail)."
@swiens - maybe also interesting for you!?
I’m always up for people’s opinions, thanks
Not really… I am now at 4 basses and, ummm, something like 6 or 7 bikes…
Do I value the things I have? Yes. They each have their place, their reason for being there. In terms of the basses, there’s the beauty and playability of the Dingwall, the tone of the Spector, the portability and 80s cool of the Steinberger and now this semi-acoustic, which I bought for the looks and will repost back on,
For the bikes, is fast road, climbing road, steel mile-muncher, vintage early 80s, single speed fun (which also folds, for commuting), MTB, indoor trainer… all have their place, all are valued in their own way.
Good luck finding the right semi-acoustic! I’ll report back on mine in a week or so!
Still - N+1 implies you always need one bass more, right? But I’m an ex-psychologist, not a mathematician
Looking forward to your feedback.
I might have found a 2nd hand Dub Step now … in glorious ORANGE! I like the Avocado colour better, but orange is of course the colour of Dutch victory (like in soccer etc. ^^).
The song and your cover is beautiful …why you don’t write tabs? I need them:sweat_smile: guess I have to watch it more than 100 times like the other guy commented
Yes, there is possibility something in always wanting more…
I’d like an orange bass! One recently came up on Marketplace, I was tempted! One of my bikes, the ‘82 vintage one is metallic orange
Thank you very much ! and yeah Poor Man’s Poison is a very interesting band.
Why would I ? finding the notes by ear is a better way
I find note by ears, they just don’t fit to what I want to play
I started riding bikes in my late 20s and took N+1 a way to serious. I still have a couple of vintage road bikes (5+), a il Diavolo, A Cippolini ( road bikes), Cinelli Singlespeed, a Fatbike, Pinarello nitro urban E-Bike:face_with_peeking_eye: and the one I ride every day my Grevil:metal:
I told myself I won’t do this with basses but I already have 3 and I’ll pickup the next one on Friday…
On the other hand, I ride bikes every day, I play bass every day (or at last I practice), so why not.
Years ago, someone told me that money spent on sports / cycling equipment wasn’t wasted if you used it.
I’d say the same is true with musical equipment…
