Pros and cons of semi-hollow basses (eg Reverend Dub King)

First: to see your reaction
Second: Yamaha does not make shortscales. So why not convert it? I already have the answer - googled it and it’s a stupid idea!

Yamaha did make medium scales though, really recommend the MB’s

No - short scale or nothing. I really really really set my mind on that.

It will be 30" … everything else can be discussed, but not that! And maybe not a single pickup, but two or even three.

But 30" it is!

The problem is that a lot of people just want to change things without knowing why they should or not… I prefer to just change myself and adapt to things. When I’ve gotten as much out of me as i can, then I’ll change whatever’s left that needs changing.

I don’t love things, i love people

I love everything that deserves my love

That would be my number one choice now. Düsenberg is only an hour ride from here, when I go 240km/h

But it’s still much too expensive, even in Germany :frowning:
The Dub King has many qualities shared with the Düsenberg , or so I heared…

This was on Reverb. The instrument is in Austria. Duesenberg Starplayer Bass 2022, Vintage Orange incl. | Reverb.

Thanks!
I could find quite a few Starplayers for around 2000-2500€.

But my budget is up to 1000€ (while staying in a relationship) to 1500€ (while being single again)…

I totally agree (from what I learned). But - except from the price - I am reluctant to purchase an instrument that is so much better than I’ll ever be.

I would be like one of those guys that I stumble across on mountains when riding my mountain bike, them having spent 10.000€ and more for a MTB … & being driven up the mountain by pick-up truck (and also not impressive otherwise, in terms of technique and guts), while I crawled up the mountain for hours, feeling sick and exhausted and old and shitty, just to downhill that very same mountain in 30-60 minutes…

It feels … unfair!

I figured since it was orange you could splurge. Keep an eye on the markets asking price doesn’t always mean getting price.

I might, if my girlfriend were Dutch. But her, being born and bred behind the Iron Curtain, couldn’t care less about decadent western colours.

If it were painted red and had hammer and sickle imprinted, now that would be another story

East German? Must be a big Rammstein fan right?

Not since I convinced her otherwise

Well. If you are going to take the Red pill be prepared to find out how deep is the rabbit hole.

Unless you are replacing the neck of the same model you’ll have some (un)foreseen issues. For start would be fits and intonation.

Short scale neck may have different heel profile to skinny too fat too narrow? If you can fit that in the neck pocket then you are dealing with the next issue. How may frets on that 30” scale neck? 19, 21, 22, or 24. Will the intonation fall in that fret count? If you have the option to buy any of the above? Are you willing to move the bridge and drill new holes to make the intonation?

Then the next issue you’ll have is the balance. The next thing you know it will end up costing you a lot of money and another girlfriend :joy:

When I modded my American precision with double jazz and put the Tony Franklin Fretless neck on it I ran into that problem. Luckily its an unlined Fretless neck and by moving the bridge back a bit I was able to make the perfect intonation but it came at the cost of making new holes and sacrificing the use of a through body stringing.

Got some data about the dimensions of the Dub King (it’s even in fluffy units!):

I was more or less joking to provoke the Yamaha fan boys here. You know, desecrating the holy bass

(But would have thought about doing it, if I got porsitive feedback!)
