Purchasing a new bass

Currently I have a fender squier affinity pj bass, and I’m thinking of getting a yamaha BB234 (i will be testing one soon I hope). However in terms of quality, would it be worth it to buy the yamaha? I do prefer the looks of the yamaha, but was really wondering if i wouldn’t be downgrading. (For extra information, i mainly play alternative rock)

Another Yamaha to consider is the trbx 304. It’s not traditional looking but it’s an excellent choice as well.

Can’t go wrong with a Yamaha. I got the TRBX604 because of these fine folks and I don’t regret it for a minute. Course Howard keeps trying to tempt me onto the BB line as well.

I haven’t owned a Squier Affinity PJ, but I did own a Squier Affinity Jazz at some point. Now I only have a Yamaha BB234. I can definitely the Yamaha is much nicer, both to hold and to play. Definitely an upgrade.

You have a set list that is half drop tuned to C? You want a 5 or (better IMO) go BEAD. Your 604 will BEAD just fine as well. Just down to B, any 5 string will fix that. Don’t need a variscale. @Morkai - this is a tone comparison for a BB734A in BEAD vs an Attitude 3 in EADG downshifted to BEAD. It’s also going through a bit of Darkglass there (as will be obvious in the tone), plus the Attitude is downshifted in a Helix. Both sound awesome to me and represent viable options for you. BEAD …
