As probably some here might have heard, SBL’s s Full Stack Bassist course is currently open for enrollment, but only until tomorrow. I can’t quite decide if I should buy it. Has anyone here done the course already?
Oh, and in about a month there starts another cohort in Ariane Caps music theory course, which is similarly priced. Maybe that could also be an alternative…
I have Gary Willis, Slap Accel, and several other courses. I spent about 3 hours total of the 200 available on the course,
I visit SBL from time to time and get their annual pass every other year, I recon that as soon as I buy the lifetime membership, that would be the last time I visit that SBL.
It’s more interesting when it’s hard not easy to get,
I’ve read some positive feedback on this program but i have a few modules unfinished from Taliking bass… (bought the creative bassist a couple of weeks back)
Let us know what you think if you decide to go for it . it is 100% money back guaranteed ;-
^ agreed, I’m also interested to hear your feedback if you enroll. I gained a lot of knowledge/skill from the Jazz Accelerator (took it after I finished B2B), and feel I could relearn a LOT if I went through it again. I spent way more than 15 weeks on it - too much to unpack for that short period.
I did the “bootcamp” SBL did the other week which was essentially a 5 hour ad for full stack bassist.
I’m interested, but not ready to pull the trigger on it. I’m thinking I may do it next year when it comes around again.
Interestingly enough, the more he has been pushing it in the last few days, the less I want to sign up this year. Just seems like a little too much of a hard sell–like if he’s trying that hard to sell it, is there something fishy? (Note - I’m not claiming SBL is trying to pull something here, just the way my brain reacts)
Yeah… I was in their workshop.
Considered purchasing, emailed support before and support basically convinced me that SBL still hasn’t matured as a consumer friendly reliable company.
Long story short: Broke a hand… asked for a pause(not a refund… a pause) for a couple of months, they refused and were insulting over email. Time trickled down, without me being able to use it.
So… “100% money back” or anything like it… I’d take it with a pinch of salt. (or MSG if you prefer)
Looks like nobody did the full stack program already… Too bad. Only half an hour left to decide
Yeah, I also found that rather annoying.
If you research earlier comments about SBL made on this forum, you’ll find many more non-positive opinions of his hard-sell marketing model.
I have no doubt Scott yields substantial sales from his relentless marketing, but, speaking strictly for myself, I found it off putting.
I initially signed up for SBL, but I dropped it before the 14-day free trial was up.
That’s when I purchased B2B, and, following that, Talking Bass courses.
Scott apparently knows a lot, and I have at least one friend who is happy with his offerings, but I just haven’t seen/felt the value in SBL. YMMV
Same here. It’s like he/they just purchased an email blitz marketing course and are trying it out. The emails are professionally structured and not something that a regular bass player would ever dream of. I just delete them without opening.
sigh
Yes, the majority of people in here are against SBL and side with the “underdog(s)”; and that is fine.
Whenever a topic includes anything about SBL, droves of BassBuzzers will come out and say how annoying they are. (Often, this is based on emails and YT videos only).
Nothing I say (or have said) will ever change that. Peace!
Joerg, you’re my dear friend and I respect your opinion on all things, but the fact is that people in life rarely get a second chance to make a first impression. Such is often the case with Scott Devine.
I realize that he has a roster of great teachers in his employ. But his non-stop, hard sell, hurry-the-fuck-up-before-it’s-never-offered-again approach to course/program marketing is exhausting.
Again, that more than likely does not necessarily reflect on ALL the quality of the content his company provides, but, man, the bad taste in the mouth that his marketing continually puts forth goes a very long way to putting me off. Perhaps that’s not fair, but it is a fact.
On a personal note, I LOVE that you have found great benefit from your foray into SBL studies. I really do. Going forward, I hope you reap even more.
Peace, brother.
It’s the Tony Robbins / Clickfunnels way.
It’s very easy to implement and technique is always the same. You can do the same for 6000USD / year… having access to baits and traps and allowing you to send 1.2M emails per month.
They all use the same techniques… 0 innovation and 0 change… most of them also have tons of fake or biased reviews.
They will also always have the “Money back guarantee” and will use virtually any excuse to avoid giving you a “full refund” like they constantly promise in the last videos.
How do I know… I am an internationally certified coach and I was invited to use those tools as a coach for one platform that offers 1on1 coaching for businesses. Yes… I’ve done it and I feel ashamed for it… it was more about scamming the client than actually providing resources back.
They all look the same… and they all do the same.
Guess the company… and you’ll find it in many known companies that use these methods.
And again note that this is nothing against the Coaches or the trainers… it’s just scammy, annoying and they will fck you over in any way they can to avoid giving you a pass because you had an accident.
Also:
Sends me more email than the Nigerian princess that wants to give me 20M USD.
Thanks, Mike - I appreciate the sentiment and the kind words.
I really don’t have a stake in this - either way. I just sometimes wish for a (slightly) more balanced discussion, is all.
And, yes, I totally understand why this email marketing style is annoying. You should only know the times I’ve got a sympathetic groan about that from people from within SBL (whenever that topic comes up; typically when a new campaign is launching…)
The last thing I want to say in this regard is this: personally, Scott is a very nice dude and truly passionate about bass and about teaching.
(Trying to write more is as futile as resisting the Borg )
I agree about Scott as a person. I do believe he’s a really good dude: sincere, personable and dedicated to teaching bass.
It’s his whole-hearted corporate adoption of smarmy marketing that sucks. And, truly, I sincerely think it’s too bad as a lot more players could likely benefit from accessing his company’s substantial arsenal of instructors and programs.
But many never will, for the reasons cited here and in the past. To me, that is the real pity.
I believe in the knowledge he has behind his paywall.
I considered this year the Blueprint, but unfortunately Taxes weren’t friendly enough for me to venture on that.
I did enjoy the curriculum on Full Stack… and again was about to press the button, but because of my previous shitty experience, I decided to email support, that gave me the same “FU” I was given when I broke my hand.
In the Workshop chat, I asked the question… and him and Ian were replying…
They replied to the one before mine… then “ahh… chat going too fast”… and reply to the question after mine.
For me that’s ill intent.
I usually say Karma will sort it out. I tried and tried… for me SBL entered the scam companies.
Hopefully “playbass” from Musora becomes like Drumeo and their support is absolutely fantastic… if this happens, content and quality of service will be there, which could give us something else beyond B2B and TalkingBass.
Ok, just for the record, despite their marketing, I’ve decided to give it a shot. Let’s see how it goes. I think I’ll try for a couple of weeks before totally committing to the program.
First impression, the first videos/lectures really look nice, relevant content, to the point, no random waffling and so. The lectures are nicely produced and each comes with a workbook summarizing the lesson and containing exercises. Obviously, I still need to dive in further, but one thing one might see as potential downside is that the lectures really are lectures, some are really long, about an hour or so. That’s fine, but it seems a bit difficult to find the exercises in there. There are no chapter markings or special practice with me style videos. Sure, the hacking tracks are the backing tracks, but they somewhat require you to be already able to do the exercise in the first place.
Regarding the structure of the curriculum, I’m a bit unsure what to think of it. On the one hand, the topics make sense, but I wonder if a more mixed approach wouldn’t be better. It really seems to be, first bass line building, then technique, then timing and rhythm. I’m not sure yet if I’d prefer a bit more integrated approach where you’d do a bit of everything each month.
Do you have a link for that? Couldn’t find anything about it.
Definitely worth giving it a shot. I like Scott’s videos; the reason I never signed on for his paid courses, however, is I have never found his free content to be particularly conducive to learning for me.
That said, I have no opinion on his paid content, and completely respect Jörg’s take there.
They only released one course so far. A very basic “30 day bass” to test the waters. Under Guitareo. You can do it on a 30 day trial. Very basic, though.
They had a timeline in their forums but I can’t find it atm… if I do I’ll post it to you.
Drumeo as a platform is absolutely incredible… if their bass was to become something like that, would be really nice.
As for the SBL, let us know what you think of it and I hope all goes smoothly.
