"Share some good music" Friday

Here is another one… for all you fusion fans out there

Some Russian-French collaboration with a monster drummer and with Anton Davidyants yielding a Herr Schwarz (I think!? This one’s for @juli0r )! This bass sounds amazing :open_mouth:

where is the link @joergkutter ? :face_with_monocle: not a big fusion fan but when someone says a bass tone is amazing, I’m here

Well, in my world it is… maybe not in yours!!!

it would not be a problem. but in fact I believe that I can recognize a “good tone” even if it’s not at all in the context of “my” music. I’m a tone geek you know

and so … yeah, excellent bass tone indeed

really excellent music too. the synth tones are a bit extreme to me (not in the direction that I like). also the drum track is just “too much” for me. too busy, too … too much.

but still a great composition and excellently played. and an excellent bass tone, yeah.

Indeed you are - I should have not underestimated that  I guess I can subjectively recognize a good tone, while you can do it more objectively, if that makes any sense…

The Le Fay basses are absolut monster basses… one day perhaps

it makes sense. possibly exactly what happens indeed.

and the brand of the instrument is a very minor factor in the final tone you get. in my opinion you choose an instrument for its feel, really. if it’s a “high end” instrument you will be able to make it sound good, if you’re comfy with it.

I’m not much sensitive to modern instruments like Le Fay or Dingwall or other modern brands, but yeah, if you’re comfortable with those things, that’s the real criteria, in my opinion.

I always appreciate your analytical, no nonsense approach to these issues, Laurent - I really do! But, maybe you are also taking away some of the “romantic” or even slightly “mythical” aspects about the different brands - the “je ne sais quoi”. I mean, I am a scientist and should totally subscribe to your view, but I think there is a little bit of magic coming from certain brands, even if it is only in the owner’s mind (but that probably makes an impact on the feel and thus the way it sounds). Isn’t there something about those Fenders as well!?!

Anyway, I think deep down we agree - it is of course not the brand name (Fender could be called Miller and they would still sound the same) - it is about what these brands do, how they design and construct basses that gives them something unique in their tones

Or… maybe it is all good marketing!!!

:joy:

same thing that makes people ride Harley Davidson even if japanese motorcycles are infinilty better … I guess …

but the fact is that Fender created a really excellent design. it works for guitar and basses, and for people like me, I just don’t see why I would need to spend time to try other things when this design works perfectly for me. maybe there’s some laziness here but why would I invest time to find something that would work better than what works perfectly ?

so, yeah, for guitar and bass, I’m stuck with Fender.

but, again, what’s comfortable for you (in a realistic high-end range) will work fine.

Due to the fanned fretboard and 5 strings I guess it’s a Le Fay “Rob”.
I think you can customize your bass pretty extensively with Le Fay but there would not be much sense in customizing your Herr Schwarz to a Rob. Except maybe the much cooler name.

I’m still far away from considering myself good enough to warrant the expense for a Le Fay bass.

Just finished listening. I got into Fusion with the Hellsing (Anime) Soundtrack. A lot of weird time signatures I was not ready for when I brought the songs to my guitar teacher. As you said nice bass tone and I can enjoy fusion from time to time. Not all the time, but once in a while it’s a treat

Oh interesting. I thought that might have been Yoko Kanno (one of my favorite musicians) due to all the Jazz she did for Cowboy Bebop. But it isn’t, it’s someone I hadn’t heard of before.

Some seriously excellent musicians working on anime soundtracks.

It’s 石井 妥師 - mostly translated to Yasushi Ishii but there are several versions for his name written with the common alphabet.

To my mind Hellsing and Cowboy Bepop are exceptions to the rule that the music of anime soundtracks without the visual aspect is kind of bland. That said - I kind of forgot how good I think the Hellsing soundtrack is.

Despite being kind of a weeb regarding Animes Cowboy Bepop is one of the big ones I actually did not watch. I always wanted to because there are a lot of people who deem it the or one of the best. A good soundtrack might drive me to actually get around and watch it sometime.

You should check out other stuff Yoko Kanno has done - all of her work is great. GitS: Stand Alone Complex and Macross Plus are probably the standouts for me.

Maybe I should adjust that to “modern anime series”.
And of course you will find good music in any category even if it’s just a few pearls. So I would not dismiss music because it was produced for an anime but at the same time I would not go out of my way to listen to anime soundtracks if the music didn’t stand out anyway while watching. I could name a dozen modern animes where the soundtrack is “meh” at best to me

Maybe “modern” is the key word here. The animes mentioned are all not the youngest productions.

Yep totally true. Still a lot of great Japanese bands do get tapped for anime from time to time. Supercar, The Pillows, Unlucky Morpheus, etc…

I’m not current on anime at all, weirdly after moving here I kind of stopped watching it.

Ha, I like those bebop scores, especially those frantic Buddy Rich-style bigband arrangements

Japan is nutty with blocking. Maybe you’ll have better luck with this, Tank, the theme from the anime Cowboy Bebop. A quarrantine performance. The woman dancing and shaking the maraca (? don’t know what else to call it) is the composer.
