"Share some good music" Friday

I liked this one, a bit like King Crimson… until they started to sing :scream::grimacing:

I don’t even know what that is… :joy:

I LOVE King Crimson

what ?! … you say you like music and you don’t listen to stoner/sludge ? are you kidding me ?

Haha, sorry man, but I truly have no idea, never heard that term before… cross my heart

OK @joergkutter , time for some alternative rock culture :innocent: because I think you’re an open-minded guy (you don’t need to like what you will ear, or even to listen to the songs to the end, but at least you’ll know those things exist  culture culture :metal:)

Stoner rock is a sub-style of rock, related to grunge and doom-metal, and obviously sludge which came a bit later. Stoner rock is characterized by down tempo, low and heavy riffs. it’s somewhat the low side of hard rock. The riffs are often repetitive and the bass takes a big place in the mix, it almost takes the role of a rythmic guitar. (and I think it’s this way that converted the guitarist I am into a bass player !)

The frontiers are not perfectly defined so it’s a bit hard to give a very precise example, and as often a particular song is an hybrid between a few related styles. This song of Unsane (one of my favorite bands ever) is some kind of stoner/garage-rock (even a bit bluesy). But you will get the idea : it’s low, down, heavy as f*ck, the bass takes a big role. Stoner.

Unsane - Against The Grain

Before I tell about sludge, I need to introduce doom metal. Let’s say it’s very down-tempo and dark metal. Quick example of what I have in mind just now : The Secret, an italian excellent doom band.

The Secret - Bell Of Urgency

Sludge is somewhere between stoner and doom metal. There are two albums, released in 2000, which defined sludge : Dopethrone by Electric Wizard (for me it’s THE ultimate reference) and Dopesick by Eyehategod. Sludge is very hypnotic, very dark, usually very long songs (15 minutes is some kind of standard, but it can be much longer), you can see sludge as an extreme version of stoner rock. But there’s really a thing with sludge, it’s like a stoner rock song would take your head and put it into mud by force  don’t resist, take it as it is, it’s some kind of dirty journey. sludge. this thing has changed my vision of music forever (really).

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (this thing is a colossal bliss - and yes, it lasts more than 20 minutes. it’s sludge.)

and then, there is psychedelic stoner/sludge which is the current side of all this. also there are some modern stoner/sludge/doom bands like Black Tomb or Yob. I could talk about this forever. I’m in a long term relashionship with stoner/sludge.

can’t resist … I told about Black Tomb and Yob … OMG I love those bands so much :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Yob - Original Face

Black Tomb - Turning Worm

and yes, I totally realize those things are pretty hard to ear and understand if you’re not into this particular extreme low-side of rock/metal culture. I realize it can be pretty intolerable and I won’t be offended if you think it sounds horrible.

Really appreciate this “lesson” in alternative styles, @terb, because I would be the first to admit that I have quite some “holes” there… But, you need to remember that I am a few years older than you and haven’t followed this sort of development for the last, oh, 20 years or so

I will take on your examples in small bites (in order to still be able to sleep at night ) and then get back to you with some feedback!

when I go to stoner/sludge concerts, the guys are all about 40-45 yr old (me included, I’m 39). funny to go in a rather extreme rock/metal live and see white hair (or even no hair at all) everywhere and some big bellies. yeah I must confess I have my first white hair too (but no belly hopefully). don’t know, there is some generational thing here maybe. probably.

Most strangely and unexpectedly, I think Dopethrone was just what I needed today.

That relentless chugging is almost trance like with out letting go of your face.

Aw man. There is 9 minutes of silence in that 20 minute track. I’m off to YouTube to see what else I can find.

@eric.kiser at this second I’m in love with you

The non-metallic equivalent would probably be shoegazer alt-rock, probably best defined by My Bloody Valentine back in the day.

Or my faves, Lush.

and if you talk about shoegaze I need to share this. no sludge involved here, but still great great music.

The violence in silence. that’s very, very sludgy. and also mostly all the post-* (rock/metal/hardcore) things I’m in  we seek the violence in the dynamics, not in the raw-high-gain-thing. well occasionnaly we are in the raw-high-gain-things but not always

It’s Friday night and I just learned the main riff in Bela Legosi’s Dead (Bauhaus). Not hard at all but brings me back to my teen years so I’m stoked to know how to play it.

Love that one! “In Fear Of Fear” is pretty simple too and a good next Bauhaus song to try after Bela - try it

So much good music linked here (I went through the whole topic) I don’t know where to start.
I’ve seen we’re some to like metal and affiliate here, so here is my little tribute:

I think Bela Lugosi’s Dead might be the last song I played live, back in college. My friend and I were bored and so I grabbed my bandmate’s bass and bass amp and he grabbed an acoustic and we went to a random coffee shop, set up in the corner, and jammed. I was not actually really a bass player at the time, and we may not have been entirely sober (or even close). They didn’t kick us out though

Grey hair? Big belly? Glasses? I guess I’m generational!
