"Share some good music" Friday

Last year New Order remastered their 1985 masterpiece Low Life and the mixing and mastering is just astonishingly good. All the instruments and vocals pop and stand apart, there is no mud, it’s not overcompressed, and generally is like listening to a new album all over again. Mad respect to their engineer.

If I remember you were going to see Babymetal. in any case their new song Metali has a real Bloodywood vibe. Bloodywood is an interesting band.

Yup! On October 11th. Babymetal and Dethklok. Very excite!

I’m going Oct 4. Have you been before? They play with the time space continuum. They’ll play their whole set and you swear it’s been just 10 minutes. It’s almost sensory overload.

“You have such a beautiful looking and sounding bass. Could you talk your instrument?”
“Not very much”

A day late but:
A long time ago, Chris Ballew the bass player for Presidents of the United States of America (Lump, Peaches) discovered garage band and made a solo album with electronic-ish music and such. Believe it or not, it was fantastic. This song, “Blindfold Yourself” is one of my favorites from the album.

Not only does it have a good bass line and groove but the sound clip from an interview used throughout the song cracks me up every time I hear it.

That’s really good. Reminds me of someone but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

She reminds me of Emma Ruth Rundle somewhat, but actually I prefer Scout Niblett.

Many years ago, before there was the intarwebz, there was a gaming company called “Lucasarts”. Yes, that Lucas. Here’s the thing, they didn’t exclusively make Star Wars games like they do now. In fact, they made quite possibly the greatest adventure games of all time. From Sam & Max to Monkey Island to many more. They were fun, amazingly designed and some of the most memorable games of the time.

One of my favorites was a game called “Full Throttle” about a motorcycle gang leader framed for murder. The game itself was intriguing and, most importantly, fun. The other thing it had was a soundtrack written and performed by a band no one had ever heard of: “The Gone Jackals”. This was a hard rock band and their songs turned an otherwise great game to an exceptional and legendary game. TGJ have put out a bunch of albums but has never gotten the recognition they deserve. I wanted to post a couple of my favorites from them.

First is “No Sign of Rain”. I’ve been listening to this one a lot as of late as I’m trying to transcribe and learn the bass line.

And, of course, the song that was used as the opening theme to Full Throttle.

Lucasarts eventually fell from grace and just turned into a company churning out Star Wars games of various…usually low quality. The former developers, however, left and created Double Fine Productions and have written more than one sequel to some of those older games and quite a few spiritual successors as well.

If you haven’t played Full Throttle, there’s a remastered version of it on Steam. I played it again a few months ago and it is still a blast.

All of the old Lucasarts games were amazing, even back to the Atari 800. Awesome callout to Full Throttle

Proper 70’s inspired stoner rock. Love UA!
