To each their own, but that it one of the ugliest bass guitars out there IMHO. It certainly sounds cool, but those horns…as the teenage girls say these days, it “give me the ick.”

Here, this ought to help. :smiling_imp:

Exactly.

Luckily for those averse, there exists no mandate to get one.

I thought it was ugly too, but it IS unique! And as everyone says, it sounds great. I keep seeing them around and I saw Tom Petty playing one. So…

“Your order of Danelectro '58 Longhorn Bass Red Hot on Reverb”

True story: I was asked to play bass in a band. I was a lifelong guitar player and I hadn’t owned a bass in several years (I previously owned a 1974 Fender Jazz and a 4001 Rickenbacker, both long sold or traded), but I was more than familiar with what a bass was.

I went to Picker’s Paradise, one of Austin’s best guitar shops back in the day, where a bud of mine, a fantastic lead guitarist, was the manager. I told him what I was looking for and he hooked me up in the bass room with virtually every brand/model to try out.

All the usual suspects were there, but one in particular struck me as the ugliest thing I’d ever seen: yep, the Danelectro Longhorn. I scoffed at its ridiculousness and promptly ignored it as I went through all the others in the room.

Well, nothing hit me as right. I just wasn’t feeling any of them, Fenders, et al. So I tried the Dano as a literal last resort.

I was immediately blown away. Talk about having zero expectations!

The feel of the Longhorn was the first thing that struck me. It was so easy to play. Next, the huge thump was so in your face that my bud poked his head in the room and asked, “What was THAT?”

That said, I wanted to be sure. So I started back at the beginning of the vast bass selections and tried each again. And again, the Longhorn, to my hands and ears, beat them all to hell.

Now, mileage invariably varies. So it goes. But all of my checkboxes for a kickass bass were checked that day. :man_shrugging:

P.S. My bandmates loved everything about my Longhorn, even its looks. :joy:

All my basses have a different look and pup configuration, so this should fit right in. Mind you, I just got my Duesenberg last month, so this may draw some wife aggro. On the other hand, I have a new rack coming that needs to be filled up!

It’s good enough for Vic DeAngelis of Maneskin

She’s who made me take another look at it

I am partial to the 59DC Shortscale.

Yeah, I became aware of her from posts in this forum.

That said, Vic wasn’t anywhere near being born back when I bought mine. :joy:

I looked hard at that one. Just wasn’t sure about the mini humbuckers.

New bass got here today. Haven’t had a ton of time to play, but overall I love it! Tuned it out of box, great set up, super impressed with workmanship, components, fret work. Awesome sound. I love it!
