This is the way
actually just went down a rabbit hole and found out about the discontinued and supposedly pretty rare mikro gsrm30 jazz bass. I have never heard of this. only saw one for sale and it was from a while ago. cool. would be a nice find for someone.
edit: btw I do not have one and I didn’t buy one. i originally had this worded to seem like maybe I had gotten one.
Sorry, still the only picture.
Anyway, the mods have started.
I worked on the frets today. First I taped off the frets, then I used this tool
Just a block of wood that angles the file. I started at 3 degrees, which took all the sharp edges off, then went to 25 then 35 degrees. That got it really close.
Then I rounded everything off with a hand file. I should have spent more time with the hand file but the neck is infinitely better. Almost feels rolled.
Then I used the 3m green pad and smoothed off the back of the neck, and then cleaned the neck and fretboard with Dunlop 65 oil.
Finally I changed out the original bridge with a Gotoh vintage bridge.
Without the pickguard, can’t install the pickup so that’s it for today I think.
May string it up and play in a while
That block is awesome. I just dropped it into my guitar tool shopping list. Any clue how easy it is to get new files for it, and which one would best for dealing with pokey frets (don’t currently have any, but I’ve got a Squier coming).
Have not looked into replacement files so no idea. File is held in place by screws so anything thar fits would work.
The block has a 90 degree option for the pokey bits, but I started out at 3 degrees and it did just fine, took away the sprout in just a few passes
@Wombat-metal I never knew anything like this existed. Just bought one online. Genius. Thanks for sharing, and enjoy the new Bass
Nice work!
This is a great tool I recommend:
Makes rounding a little more stress-free.
You know this is another option; I just rolled the fretboard on a cheapo guitar I am working on with progressive sanding with a sanding block. If you already have the neck off, rolling a fretboard edge is not difficult (and has the side effect of automatically fixing any sprout).
Three other tools I recommend for fret work are a fret rocker, a crowning file and a fretting hammer; these are all you need for basic fret work (fixing high frets, etc).
This MusicNomad tool is awesome and replaces the need for any rulers as well:
Sweet, another excuse to get a hammer! That brass face makes it totally different from my soft face hammer lol
lol exactly
You can even find one like mine that has a hard rubber face too, which is actually useful.
Bought one too…you should get a commission
Just felt the frets on my remaining two fretted basses. They are perfect, “unfortunately”.
I really would like to use that tool, just cause it looks so good
Came across this on the web, some news that will be released at NAMM 2025…
Magneto Guitars is coming out with their first ever Bass - a short scale…
Came here to post this picture in the Bass Porn thread, but I see you beat me to it
i saw that but didn’t read the copy, i wasn’t unaware it was short scale. very pretty
Looks like something Eastwood would make. Looks good
Take my money!
a million years ago I said I would never be able to afford a short scale stingray. until I did. but I’m saying it again, I will NEVER be able to afford a custom NS. unless I sell some organs
don’t think I’ve had these here yet, if I have than apologies. I’m no fender guy but $200 for this is insane
After some trials and tribulations(see post in the upgrade thread), I got this bronco together and playing. To me, it’s got a cool sound, different from my other p basses. I went with 250 pots, but put a .022 capacitor instead of the usual .047. Fralin 51 split p. I’ll post a recording one I figure out how to do that. Also did a sand/refinish of neck, and smoothed/leveled frets. I really like it, plays awesome.
