Short Love

Nah, 20. I still work out but I haven’t worked hard enough to look like that since I was in Afghanistan and had 3 hours a day / 6 days a week to get there. Now, I’m just too old for that BS and just try to keep myself fit.

I had my midlife crisis age 45/50 (I’m 60 now). Went into a hardcore workout regime, change of diet (very low carb) … and went to 6% body fat in a few months … and looked better than in my most intense martial arts times. And became very strong and had great endurance.

Mind over matter! It’s possible…

In fact I am thinking about doing it again, as I became fat, lazy and ugly

I don’t doubt that, I just don’t care that much anymore other than looking half decent for my wife and aging gracefully.

So your wife does not make “subtle” statements like: “WE should workout more!”?
(We = you :-))

My girlfriend is master in such remarks. She’s a sneaky one!

Nope. I do my thing, she does hers and we’re just happy to have each other. At least I am, when I surprise her by carrying in a new bass… I sometimes doubt she feels quite as strongly as I do. At least temporarily. I promised her that it would be cheaper than a corvette as far as mid life crisis’ go. Still true for now.

Did you start playing Aqualung?

I did something similar about 20 years ago and am considering doing it again. I seem to have two modes, either full hardcore for working out, or none.

I had just gotten started getting back on it again hardcore when the pandemic hit, and then lost it all.

Yeah (except for the “ugly” part :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:). French bakery and pastry shops did that to me, along with a complete lack of restraint. I gained 15 kg in 4 years. Sheesh. No more pain aux raisins (bread with raisins, sweetened) for breakfast. No desserts with meals in restaurants (lots of good ones within a 4 block radius of my apartment). More salads and seafood at home. Down 2 1/2 kg. 12 1/2 more to go.

Maybe we should move the “we are lazy, fat and ugly” discussion from “short love” to “thin love”?

Start a workout and diet group?

They have these tiny ones at work with breakfast every morning and they are a constant temptation.

The 2818 saga continues: today I set the string action really low. I mean like: really low. Don’t know why, but you can set string action height much lower with these strings than with my others, without any buzzing.

That’s cool, as I “solved” the string control issue for the time being that way. (Still would like to know an alternative to Fingerease)

Also, I learned something new about pickups: when they are very low AND the PU is very sensitive (like the EMG X series) AND the strings are very “magnetic”/responsive (like cobalt), you hear a lot of noise from unmuted strings.
I guess this is because the volume delta between unmuted vibrating strings and plucked string is not very high, so you hear it better. Better means: the bass is making vibrating string noise all the time, even when you just move the bass.

That is of course unwanted, so I raised the PU again. Effect: the plucked string sounds (of course) louder, but you cannot hear the unmuted string noise anymore (cause: increased delta).

It confirms my theory somehow, that you should not mix sensitive PUs with very responsive strings … at least if you can’t play/mute properly…

The Rascal and Mustang are on my list! I had a Mikro as my first bass which is even smaller than most Short scales. I do love my jazz basses and plan to get a five string Sire but man do I love short scales. I am also thinking the Fallout Bass from G&L! Too many on the list haha. For me with smaller fingers it makes playing lines for walking bass and also reading swing charts easier for me.

I’ve been playing a G&L Fallout for 3 years. Never out of tune, rock solid bridges, sustain that’ll last 30-45 seconds. I either got lucky when I found this one of they’re all good stuff. My gear tech tells me I’ll never find another short scale for $550 that’ll do what the Fallout is doing. You switch that pick up into overdrive and you can rattle panties is the nose bleed seats.
