There is a huge risk of destroying the resistive track of the pot
Yeah, the reasonnable choice would obviously be to buy the right pots with a shaft that correspond to your knobs.

OK, you just convinced me NOT to do it! Thanks!
Again, the EMG pots fit perfectly. Unfortunately I could not find data about the shaft diameter of solid shaft pots available here in Germany.
Allparts CTS solid shaft pot seems to be 6.3mm, which is too large.
From reviews of the Schaller ST knob I gathered, that original Fender pots fit perfectly.
I can get Fender replacement pots here, but I’m not sure they are the same size (read some strange reviews). Also some reviews say, the Fender pots s#ck, compared to the DiMarzio.
Good thing about the Fender pots is that I can say that I have a fender bass if I install them
DiMarzio almost assuredly buys pots from CTS, Alpha, or Bourne; they do not make their own.
Here is a measure of an original CTS pot that comes directly from one of my american Fender’s :
(sorry for the dust)
6.35mm is an imperial (inch) pot at 1/4". Any matching one will work, be it from Fender, Alpha, Bourne, CTS, or the Pot Fairy.
Yes, exactly! So this is why I found it interesting that some reviewers on Thomann said that the Fender pot fits exactly. Possibly Fender uses 6.3mm and 6mm pots??!
PS thanks for the effort - appreciate it!
There’s basically two sizes used in this application on basses and guitars. 6mm (metric) pots and 6.35mm (1/4" imperial) pots.
Be careful - you’re gonna get yourself in trouble! Just saying
But, I will verify the video clip in our local Aussie bar and give some feedback.
But first, let’s solve my knob issue
So, I just filled the gap in the spilt shaft with the moldable glue. Discovered that one side of one of the split shafts was already breaking (cause of the pressure of the screw of the knob), so I thought I give it a go, before abandoning them.
Now I have to wait an hour for results.
In fact I almost hope it doesn’t work. I’m fed up with those pots and really would like to have a plug and play pot.
I have learned one thing the hard way though: split shafts make knobs wobbly, cause of the screw
Split shafts are for push-on knobs. Solid shafts are for the locknut knobs. It’s not complicated
Hahahaaaaaaa, my friend! So, I just talked to the grandma of mr Schaller himself (at least she sounded that way), in other words: I called Schaller.
She says that the 6mm version I have are made for 6mm (ish) split shaft pots.
Slowly I get the feeling that the issue might be … me!
I guess I have screwed the pots - by screwing them wrong.
Not into the gap, but in a way that pressed the shaft together. By repeatedly doing it, one knob is shortly before breaking. The others I might be able to save.
I will write a message to Schaller, re-explaining the issue and add some pics, as I had the feeling that the nice old lady on the phone was not 100% knowledgeable. I did buy some cookies though…
She sounded exactly like this:
no
So you know more than that nice old cookie selling lady from Schaller??! ^^
maybe.
She could have been trolling you
This thread is like Amazon, it keeps delivering
Maaaaan - she is worse than me!
Yeah - I document everything, so that others do not have to make the same mistakes that I did…
