“Mandolin-style” is a flat out misnomer.
The image posted is just an example of a supremely shitty burst. I’ve seen mandolins selling for 200 bucks with better bursts. I’ve also seen master-craft pieces with stunningly beautiful bursts.
Just as with guitars and basses, the quality of craftsmanship and artistry runs the gamut, from worse than pedestrian to God-like. It all depends on who builds them and where you look.

At first glance I thought of purple graffiti.

IKR. That one I I really want to like, too.

TRBX174? Excellent bass!
Yamaha makes super affordable quality, it’s nice to see they care about more than just profits!

Not only is the burst bad, it’s the shockingly light neck next to the dark burst that hurts just as much.

IKR. Someone had that thing custom made like that. That Tobias is going to be one of the best made hideous basses out there.

oh that’s much worse.
Though I will agree with you about the attention to detail on the knobs.
Edit: wrong mention lol

Okay, I like that. I wouldn’t have thought of putting that purple and blue together.
In the southern US, that shade of blue is very close to what we call haint blue.

I agree with Zooey! But I am not unbiased: I own a Squier Classic Vibe '60s Jazz bass. I like the colours very much. It is an awesome bass too.

I’m not sure which category this “sunset burst” Revstar is in. I kinda like it, but the asymmetry is making me twitch a little.

Now, that’s something one doesn’t see everyday! Kind of a cross between a lizard and a parrot?

I don’t hate that finish but it is definitely not for me.

Besides the colours, I like seeing the woodgrain.
I swapped the tort pick guard for a clear one.
