Show the Bursts You Love & Those You Hate(-ish)

And it is, of course, a LP

Certainly very partial to this one - very well executed, and, well, matching headstock:

This one I always hated. In fact, there are no redeeming features on that bass (for me):

First, I love the burst on your Jabba HF. It is superbly done and looks amazing.

Second, hey! You’re talking about the bass I played in a band. Truth.

That Danelectro short scale is definitely strange-looking, granted. But when I was bass shopping for the new band, I literally tried every Fender, Rick, Gibson, et al, in the shop, desperately looking for a Cinderella glass slipper fit for playability and tone. The Danelectro was the last one in the joint, so I said what the hell.

No lie, it killed. It was very lightweight, balanced beautifully in the lap, hanged effortlessly with a strap, played like butter, and thundered like Thor’s hammer slamming into an Unobtanium anvil.

It was ugly as hell from the front, but it was gorgeous to hold, play, and hear. I really wish I still owned it.

I was indeed purely speaking from an aesthetics point of view (and, of course, seen through my personal glasses). I am sure this may not do justice to this bass wrt how it plays and sounds

Since this one started the thread I am going to repost it and ask for an opinion other than Outregeous and ‘no way in Hell’

I know, man. It’s all good. Funny thing is, I objectively think you would have loved playing that little sucker. The sheer feel of its neck and ballsy tone were shockingly good.

An opinion of what, exactly? Burst looks? Build/components quality? Fidelity to the Rick esthetic and/or tone? Worth the risk of buying?

Burst look, we know it is a Chickenbacker

So, a raw opinion (and that is really only that, nothing balanced here ) is that I don’t like that type of color burst at all. To me, it looks like something badly baked - burnt on the outside, still way too gooey on the inside. And how that pickguard contrasts with the body is not making things better - that’s not even the same hue…

So, there you have it - my opinion

That said, if it’s cheap, get it and mod the heck out of it (including giving it a new paint job). Sounds like a perfect project bass and you might end up with a cool Rick copy that plays well

OK, here goes. The burst isn’t to my taste because the transition from dark to body color is too abrupt - there’s not enough subtlety or finesse in the airbrushing.

IMHO, creating a great burst means creating a work of art. This one doesn’t get there for me.

But, as @joergkutter said, it would likely be a good mod platform.

For me any Chickenbacker will be a mod platform but a good looking one would be ideal
There is a wide variety of finishes

Most of these finishes look much better than the first one you showed (again, that’s my personal taste speaking here ). The blue one or the black one would be my preferences, and then probably the cherry burst.

Don’t disagree- I was attracted to something a bit different

all of those look so much better than the first, which looks like someone color-faxed a piece of burnt toast.

The 6th and 8th are pretty bad too though.

Numbers 1 and 3 are my subjective picks.

I have never played one, and never considered it as it’s ugly as heck. But sparks my interest as Vic DeAngeles kills it as you say laying down the groove for Maneskin. It sounds really good in a rock band.

Mine was a three-man rock band. Lots of ZZ Top, Little Feat, Lynard Skynard, Allman Brothers, some very, very early-Beatles rock ‘n’ roll (e.g., “Slow Down”). My Danelctro Longhorn was a hit with my bandmates and our fans. A real boom stick. :firecracker:

I have picked them as the best tone out of several blind tests.

I don’t care, there’s no way. And I’m even one that prefers unusual instruments.

That’s for damn sure!

Danelectro Longhorn basses aren’t for everyone, but that puts them squarely in the majority of all basses.

Vic De Angelis has a whole bunch of them, in a wide variety of colors. I suspect she had them painted.

She has at least one (very likely more) in the orange-y burst like mine had, but now Danelectro is offering them in black.

Gotta say, I would’ve bought a black one if I could’ve.

Here’s a review. Brings back memories.
