sorry such a late response. I love my ampeg pf-800. Im sure its similar to the pf-500. I have owned the ampeg svt4 pro and I did not particularly like it. I know its “Legendary” and all… I had that paired to a svt 8x10 cabinet and an svt 6x10 cab and I honestly could not get a tone that i truly could work with. No matter what I did, it always had this muddy fuzz to it. Louder than all get out and shake the house down but I did not like the tone… Besides between the three cabinets it was nearly 250 lbs. So I sold the amp, both cabinets and a Mexican Strat for the Carvin BX1600 Head unit into a BR1x15 and a BR2x10 system that is plenty loud and articulate. The head unit is so versatile and powerful that I hope it never dies! So much headroom. I can honestly double the speakers if I want. Then with the pf-800 I have now paried that with two PJB C-4 cabinets and that head unit has the “Ampeg” sound but not nearly as defined and can be eq’d out if I want. The PJB C4 cabinets are rediculous! Each cabinet runs with 4 5 inch PJB speakers that I would put up against any 4x10 cabinet out there at 800 Watts for definition and clarity, hands down the cleanest bass cabinet I have heard. for practicing I purchased the PJB Headphone Amp v2. WOW! with the right headphones you cant find a better headphone amp. Not just for listening, it is a full fledged pre amp that can be direct line to a pa or mixing console and gives the best tone ever. fully adjustable. I cannot say enough about Phil Jones and what he brings to the market! such a good man doing the best he knows to be the best. quite honestly no one is better in bass tone and quality.
I love Carvin stuff.
The guitars / basses are phenominal (The brand it Keisel now, but, last I heard, they are still licensed to brand Carvin if you wanted to order one)
The Bass amps are stellar.
I missed out on buying a BX-500 that looked brand new, not even much signs of normal wear. It was listed for $150, and just had the tube replaced. It is a solid state amp with a tube pre-amp, so it is not a big tube amp head. I can’t recall the last time I actually heard one, but they sound similar to the SVT, but more versatile, IMO, as they can be colored in a myriad of ways, that said, I have not played on a true classic SVT, and could not say how versitile it is to me, but $150 for a Carvin, vs $$$$$ 5 golden dollar signs for a SVT, plus the Carvin is less then 5lbs, and is about the size of a sheet of paper (maybe legal paper), YEAH, I am gonna take the Carvin all day long.
Unfortunately, I got Necrotizing Fasciitis, and ended up in the hospital for 20 days, and when I got out, and got well, it had been sold already.
I still look around for those BX’s alot, but usually find them in rugged condition, or really expensive. I can’t imagine ever needing bigger than the 500. I had seen a 1500 for a good price once, but it just seemed like way overkill. I was not really looking to buy at the time, I just bookmarked it, and have not even gone back to look, but I am not in the amp buying position at the moment.
Nice, I am a 10:" guy if you give me a choice out of 8-10-12-15, I pick 10" speakers any day.
However, I do love the notion of the 5" speakers and I know Mike @itsratso has some of those speakers and loves (or loved, you never know if he is selling them for something else now or not ) them. I would not hesitate to have or add a 4 x 5 cabinet if I ever needed it, but at the rate I am going, I may never NEED an amp again, and if I do, I do have enough with my SWR stuff (that I love too), and an extra Gallien-Krueger Backline 250 head, so IDK if I will ever be getting one, but, who knows, someday, maybe.
I would certainly be looking at the PJB stuff for sure.
My first real paying gig is coming up. Outdoors at a lake. PA and sound guy and all! Finally! I’m totally geeked about it. We have some 60 songs to pull from. Mostly classic rock and metal. Here is my rig all setup and ready! What do you think?
Awesome!
Very nice @Lanmusicman ,
Hope you have a great experience, best wishes and have fun,
Cheers Brian
If that doesnt get the job done, I feel sorry for your bank account for the next gig.
Thank you all! I have certainly invested a bit of coin… The tonal qualities of that bass rig at high volume is rediculous! I had an ampeg svt4pro 1600 watt with 2 810 cabs and this rig sounds many times better to me with less distortion. Less is more… More or less.
Lol this has to be insane loud. Nice rig!
You know, @Lanmusicman , this is a great idea. I too have problems getting my kids out of bed for school.
The rig makes my clothes shake! I think it will wake the neighbors kids. That’s 1600 watts spread evenly across the 4 speakers! With basses and pedals approx $6,000.00
Last saturday, I bought a used Line 6 LD300 Pro. It’s a 300w (class A/B) combo, 1x15" bass reflex + tweeter (which can be disabled). This is the same preamp than I have on my Bass Floor POD, with very few models and it does not sound like any “real” POD. It’s made to be used way more like an analog amp. I really like the models choice : an Eden, a B15, a SVT, a Marshall and a SVT with a saturated Sansamp blended with the clean SVT tone. Also there is a very cool bass synth.
The amp is very heavy, and my idea would be to split it into a head (that I would build as a woodworking project) and a cab. A 300w head with nice and useable models would be a nice thing to have. Also the power amp is on a separate PCB, and there is enough room to replace it for a more powerful class D module if I ever want/need more power.
I paid 100€ for this amp, which is not much, especially considering that the seller gave me, as a bonus, a FBV Express MkII :
I already have a first generation FBV Express, but this MkII version is way more interesting because it adds a USB port so that it can control a computer by MIDI. There is a software that allows to assign and manage the MIDI messages sent by each button. This could be really useful for Reaper.
The FBV Express MkII is the current model, it still sells new for 85€. So, that’s kinda like I bought one and paid 15€ more for the amp
That is a sweet deal!
Interesting. So in theory I should be able to split the old Peavey I have and add a seperate head unit to it @terb ?
oh yeah, you can do this with every combo
Great find @terb !
Been wanting this one for a while now. I lost out on a deal from offer up when I was in the hospital for knee replacement. When I got out it was gone.
Oh well, found another one, and this one is now all mine.
This is an archive web page, but it specs the amp out, plus the user reviews are off the charts. I am all about raving about it as well.
That is a lot of amp for $250! Congrats.
Nice, another Carvin lover. Thats is a bit more than what I have, but I can still make my ears ring and head shake with what I got.
I’m trying to thin down my collection and you certainly aren’t helping @T_dub
