I had a buddy with an Ampeg 8x8 cabinet and that thing would shake the floor like an earthquake, but… like you said… it wasn’t just a single 8.
Yeah for sure, and I know exactly what Josh means there - back in college my roommate and I made our own pair of 12" subwoofers for just this reason. Sounded meh (speaker cab was particle board) but definitely moved the room.
For my current use in a small apartment, “tone sounds great at low volume” is probably more what I am aiming for, though, so something like the Rumble 25 or Crush 25B are perfect.
Rumble 40 or Crush 50 looked and sounded great too - and the Rumble 40 was super tempting because it has the higher end combo electronics at a good price point.
That’s what I have too, @howard . . . . . . Great little amp!
I bought an amp stand for it, and that made a good improvement:
Eventually I’ll upgrade (probably to the Rumble 100), but for now this thing rocks!
All best, Joe
A couple of my amps…
And my trusty traveling companion, the Blackstar Fly3, fits great in a suitcase and is perfect for hotel room playing:
And a Behringer KDX12 at home. It’s a 600w keyboard amp but seems to work just fine for guitar and bass too:
Oh wow, an EQ on the amp with sliders. I love it.
Holy cow. I feel like there’s a mad scientist laboratory or some kind of robot just out of frame of those first two amp shots… Cool stuff!!
I like to tinker. lol
I have a Rumble 40 but right now I mostly just use that with headphones. My main rig is this:
Gallien-Krueger MB Fusion 800 and an Acme Low B-2 (Series II). I don’t see myself needing anything more in the foreseeable future as I just play at home and this is more than enough to shake the whole house.
Wow so cool!
And yeah, keyboard amps often work well for bass, I’ve had an okay time playing out of whatever Roland was kicking around at rehearsals over the years.
Yeah @lucas9000 that looks like plenty of rig! Can’t tell if that’s a 2x10 or a 2x12, but either way it’s rare that you * really * need a bigger amp for a gig. Want to, maybe, but need to, probably not.
It’s a 2x10, plus separate midrange woofer and high frequency tweeter.
Well yesterday, I traded in my Rumble 25 for a Rumble 100 . . .
Although it’s 3" deeper, 1" wider, and 3" taller than the 25, it only weighs about a pound more, so it’s very easy to handle and transport.
Lots more power and available settings (which I’ll need to experiment with), and of course a 12" vs 8" speaker. Using it with the OnStage RS7500 stand that I mentioned above.
You should hear how nice “Riders on the Storm” sounds now . . .
Ordered the LT25 and it arrived damaged. Guitar City gave me a nice discount for my inconvenience so I exchanged it for the Studio 40. I just started playing and I love playing around with the presets. I’m happy with it.
I just bought one of the OnStage stands and wish I had done so months ago. The thing is great.
Glad you’re happy with it, @howard . . .
One little tip for you: the leg in the back (with the adjustment screw) sometimes rattles when you’re playing. I fixed that by simply putting a small piece of duct tape on the leg before inserting it and tightening the screw . . .
HTH and all best, Joe
I have an Ampeg BA115-HPT, a 220w combo, 1x15", with a tube preamp. It sounds OK (not a SVT but there is that distinctive Ampeg tone), is relatively compact et powerful enough.
I don’t recommend this amp because it is the less reliable amp I’ve ever had.
I bought it to a friend at a low price, at the time the amp had two issues. as I know a bit in electronics and amps, I’ve been able to repair it. I had to replace the 4 power MosFET and I removed the faulty tweeter and crossover filter. I much prefer the tone of the 15" only, and I don’t really understand why some bass amps have tweeters.
Now the amp has a third breakdown : the DI is fried. I will repair it … again … but I think I will not be gentle anymore I plan to remove the existing preamp and create a brand new one, inspired by the SVT-VR. I may modify the DI too, because it’s a post-master one : not very useful !
Yeah at that point just turn it into a nice little cab
it will probably end like this one day
Now I am kind of tempted to look for a 2x10 combo with a busted amp being sold as junk
Except I sold my soldering station. Hmm, if I find a deal I could always go buy a cheapo.
I’m encouraged. I’m always wanting the next better thing, but the truth is, I’m just starting out and just need something I can hear in my home office. I’m having a hard time justifying the $199 for the 40. I think I need to lose the speaker envy and just get something I can afford that sounds good for the range.
