Rosewood??
I dig the aesthetics (matching headstock, dark fretboard), but would be struggling with the shape itself
I understand it’s iconic, though ![]()
Congrats!

Congrats!
Yeah rosewood, very nice looking.
I have realized I am not exactly in to traditional basses.
Two TRBX, two Warwicks, the BB and this. The BB is as traditional as it gets but otherwise I’ve been all about the unusually shaped instruments ![]()
Very nice Howard @howard ,
I am envious, enjoy,
Cheers Brian
So, as promised in another thread, after years of drooling over them in mail-order catalogs, I finally got one of my “Holy Grail” basses: a Carvin. Found it on Offer Up at the exact right time.
Forgive the unfinished walls behind it, we’ve converted the garage into my office/man-cave/music/game room, and we’re not done with the walls yet.
Anyway, it’s a Carvin LB20, circa at least 1998 (although it could be as late as 2005, as it’s got a high serial number and the LB20s were virtually unchanged from 1998 through 2005). Really well made instruments, and it plays like a dream. There’s something about the construction and shape and playability of Carvin basses that just does it for me.
This particular one definitely had an active life. I spent the last 2 days cleaning and polishing and conditioning it. I’ve also made some minor bridge and truss adjustments, but I think I need to have a pro take a look at it and make sure it’s all adjusted properly. I might actually get it fully refinished at some point.
It plays like a dream and sounds awesome, especially through my new Rumble 40.
Congratulations @howard !
Thank you!
Cleaned and oiled the fretboard, put a little elbow grease into polishing the frets, cleaned up nicely
Just put on the NYXL’s and set her up.
That’s some awesome grain!
Cool! Is that an ebony fretboard, or just lighting?
It is an ebony fretboard! It needs a bit of TLC, but I’m working on it. ![]()
Beautiful grain in the fretwood
Very nice @JustTim,
Timothy B Schmitt from the Eagles is an ambassador for the company,
Hope you enjoy it,
Cheers Brian
Nice clean up job on the neck @howard
It certainly is a nice piece of rosewood
Thanks! Yeah, I was surprised, the original pics totally didn’t show this off.
That’s awesome. Ebony can look amazing. That bass looks good now and will end up really cool and unusual.
Glad everything worked out Howard! It looks amazing and this one is actually the only Yamaha on my wishlist
Hi folks. I thought I’d contribute to the “If you show me yours, I’ll show you mine” thread. Here is my “collection”.
Both currently have stock everything. I’m waiting on a set of Seymour Duncan Steve Harris pups and Steve Harris strings to put on the P-clone, as well as a hi-mass bridge. I have the bridge, but I’m not going to perform surgery untill I have all the stuff.
As for the Peavey, I want to upgrade the electronics as well, but I’m going to wait until the P is done. I’m dithering between a
JJ set, the Seymour Duncan Apollo JJ (linear noise cancelling) or the EMG Riptides.
Thanks!
That Peavey looks great!
You should have a look at Fralin pickups for the J-J.
From what I read these are amazing, generally regarded as the best of the bunch, very customizable sound.
I would like to try them out at one point in something, when I have a something to try them in.
I love unique looking basses, and this is one for sure @howard.
One day, one day I will be in Japan for the sole purpose of shopping for bass……
Thanks @John_E . That Fralin Split Jazz looks mighty fine.
