While I am not a tort enjoyer, I do love salami, and can appreciate the fine homage tort pays to it.
Normally I’m not a tort fan, but I gotta admit that I really like the red on red on my G&L.
Yeah I actually love the way tort on purple looks for the Pacificas. It has its place, just like a nice summer sausage.
That’s a nice tort. Looks good on the same model in red too.
Looks great.
Love it. Considered it.
That’s a Cold Shot!
This is the pedal you want:
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GAFC--boss-ga-fc-foot-controller
Note there’s a slightly more expensive version, the GA-FC-EX, but my understanding is you can only use the EX features on the guitar amps (that could be wrong, as I got that from a YouTube video, and accuracy of info on YouTube seems to be 50% at best). But I looked at the extra things the EX could do and didn’t see any need for them personally.
Unless you’re talking expression pedal, because you can connect one of those to it as well.
EDIT: I got one for my 210, but I haven’t used it yet.
Thanks for the data, that’s the one alrighty…
Katana’s keeps coming up on the forum as a great amp and those who are praising them seem to know what they are talking about. I’m thinking about getting a 110.
What’s the report on your 210?
I like it so far. I switched from a Rumble 100, and I like the tone out of the box better on the Katana. The Katana had more options with the EQ, which is nice.
I haven’t done a whole lot with the effects yet. I did download the Boss ones from the website, and I’ve been using the Funk R&B ones they made.
Seems like you could get about any tone you want from this amp if you take the time to experiment and dial it in. If you use the computer or phone app, you can adjust all the parameters of the effects, just like you could on the actual pedals.
The only negative I’ve encountered so far is an issue installing the Android app to use with the Bluetooth adapter, but I did find a work around for it.
Also it’s a lot heavier than the Rumble, but you can’t have everything I guess. ![]()
Also I’m not sure if I didn’t wrong but the app on the Bass doesn’t show the mini pedals like the Katana Guitar amp. It would be kinda cool.
As far as the GA-FC, I agree I don’t think inner the EX model because I don’t think inner more than 4. Technically, we get 5 presets channel 1-4 and the panel. Which is plenty for me.
I probably need the
-main bass preset with some compressor
-Reberb/ delay/ chorus
-Wah/ Auto Wah
-Octave/ compressor a la Tony Levin
I was playing with auto wah tonight mixed with chorus, reverb, and delay on a Slowdive song. I figure if the guitars are allowed to go crazy with effects the bass should too. The reverb and wah were fighting and it sounded awful, but it was fun.
This is my new modded Harley Benton MV-4MSB short scale bass (my third one).
Mods:
- made fretless, using the veneer method
- changed tuners to Gotoh GB707
- sanded down the nut. If you think, string action height is low - sand it some more to bring it down a little

- changed pickups to EMG GZR P/J. Will likely be replaced with the DiMarzio DP126, though the GZR sound very very good!
- installed a Fender Highmass Bridge
- changed the knobs. I like the Schaller “hats”
- installed Schaller S-Locks
And installed La Bella 760FS-S flatwounds. That was a revelation!
This what it looks like:
Close-up fretboard. Looks quite ok:
Extreme close up - you can see imperfections, but it’s ok. And it plays absolutely wonderful:
This is what it looked like originally:
Nice work, Dutchman.
Thanks - I am quite proud of it!
Also, I reflected the whole process on zzeee Zzzzerrmman bass forum, and now quite a few German bass players there are converting some cheap basses to fretless too, using “my” method.
Next week one of them comes and visits me to play my bass (and he has a German handmade Magnus Sharkey fretless, which is serious stuff!).
For me that is the biggest compliment!
Maybe I started a new fretless trend here? That would be very funny, considering the fact that I still can’t play properly…
Two questions:
-
made fretless, using the veneer method. What is the veneer method?
-
how much (€) have you put into this bass?
Looks good, btw.
Veneer method
Some people fill the gap with wood filler (@Paul_9207). That’s a legit method, and much easier.
I used veneer, which is more complicated. You need more tools and more steps to make a bass fretless.
Some consider this the better method, in terms of tone and look. For me it was logical that wood on wood (on basses ^^) is better, so I did that.
You can see the whole process here: Jetzt geht's lohooooos: Harley Benton MV-4MSB auf fretless umbauen | Bassic.de
As always, I posted a lot of pictures, no need to understand the words ![]()
One picture I will post here, as this is the most important intermediate state:
Costs
- Harley Benton MV-4MSB, 2nd hand but in fact new: 180€
- Gotoh Tuners: 50€. These are not necessary, but I like them.
- EMG GZR: I already had them, but 150€
- Fender Highmass Bridge: already had it, but 35€. Some say it’s not necessary. I don’t!
- Schaller knobs: 35€, cause black. In silver it would be be 25€
I needed to buy the veneer (4€) and some tools (30€).
Flats: 55€
So, that totals 450€ (without the tools and flats), which is a little below the Sire U5 fretless. The Sire U5 has the same strings as the HB, so I would have replaced the strings on that bass too…
Now, the Sire U5 fretless is great, but it did not feel right. The HB fits my body, and that is the most important thing, in my opinion.
My fretless has much better parts, and I talked to a luthier yesterday and he said that the HB neck is much better than the Sire, but the HB body a little worse (cause of the paint, which is a little brittle).
Also, with the parts I have, my HB sounds much better than the stock Sire U5, as confirmed by the luthier. And I mean MUCH (!!!) better! I think it’s the combination of the flats and the EMG GZR that does the job.
If I would converted my HB to a similar quality as the Sire I would have updated the PUs only, as the HB PUs are sh*t!
So than the cost would have been 330€…
I think, that’s more than acceptable.
And, yes, I know: I would never get that money back, if selling it. But I am very loyal to stuff, so that’s not an issue.
Looks good
I really really really hate the colour! But soundwise it’s a dream!
I think you should change the pick guard to a custom that then really lifts it, plain white on that light colour looks pretty boring. This guy is U.K. based, so maybe not ideal for you, given our self-imposed trade barriers, but his work is excellent (he produced the JWST Deep Field guard I have on my Dingwall). Have a look at some of his work, it rocks!
