I rather think you are right. I bought it off a woman who said she had tried to learn, but had given up. The way the thing was set up, it was unplayable. She told me she had put the flats on it as she found the original strings (I assume rounds) uncomfortableā¦. The bass doesnāt actually look like itās been played though. Anyway, Iāll order new strings this eveningā¦
I bought a bass from a guy once. Went to his home, checked the bass, did all the things youād do to check the setup and action height. He watched me do all this like I was a space alien. Asked me what I was doing, had no idea the neck, saddles etc. are all adjustable.
The problem is, hearing what others use is only of limited help⦠you will need to test some of them for yourself to find out. Apart from the brand and model, the gauges are very important as well.
Myself, I tend to go for medium-light gauges and prefer Ni-coated strings above most of the rest. Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Rounds, DR Pure Blues, Elixir Nanoweb are excellent, but pricey. A bit less expensive, but still nice are Curt Mangan Nickel, and the recently introduced DR Fodera Nickel strings. These are all strings that feel and sound good to meā¦
Others like DāAddario NYXLs or Rotosounds or Ernie Ball strings⦠Lots and lots of options out there - which means you need to invest some dough before you find your stringsā¦
All in all, I find strings extremely important for my joy of playing!!
Yeah. This is why you see some fierce brand loyalty there too; once you find ones you like itās easy to self-convince they are the end all be all of strings. Meshing with your strings is so important, itās a big part of the feel.
At this point, the one and only person who needs to be sure that particular strings are the āend all/be allā for him/her is satisfied and happily playing. Anyone elseās take on said strings is immaterial.
Either Fender 45 or Slinky. Want more fancy the just go directly to TI or optima. Unique gold. Things in between are just the āflavorā of the month.
If Fender 45 and slinky only sold a few their price would be at least double with the sound and build quality. I tried other brands simply because I didnāt know any better. All strings are pretty good especially if/ when you believe their marketing. Few exceed the expectations unless you really go there to the extreme end of the spectrum. The rest wonāt disappoint you but it wonāt be as memorable as some.
See this is a good example, I like DāAddario much more than Ernie Ball and slightly more than Fender stock - and DāAddario makes the strings for Fender, they are basically cheaper EXLās
This is where the string decision is so subjective. The only strings I wonāt play are Fender 45s and Slinkys. I donāt like the feel of Slinkys, and the Fenders feel like playing cheese graters to me. But I like the flats from both companies.
Respect to Al, I just donāt like those strings.
GHS Bass Boomers are good and wonāt break the bank.
