Loved this song growing up.
Can you call a bass Sheb?
why not
Hi,
Here are my two basses:
The first one I got was the bass on the right: a second-hand Ibanez Jumpstart IJSR190N.
The second one, on the left, is a Warwick RockBass Corvette $$. I won this bass in 2023 in a Christmas giveaway. I was very lucky because I only posted two comments in the giveaway!
(I apologize for the mess on my bed xD)
Double humbucker Warwick ⊠K⊠yer not messin around⊠LOL
My bass collection is better than my bass playing, but I just love short scale basses.
Here is my main collection before I added a Höfner 500/1 and fretless Sire U5. The 6 string in the back lost its spot. The 27" Valiant Mini (nothing mini about its tone!) is hanging on an individual stand because the body is too small and goes straight to the floor.
Here are the 17" Mayones Cali 4 and Cali 5 that were my Xmas present to myself.
Here is an example of the Marco MarcĂșstico that I ordered last May that is due for completion at the end of February 2025.
Hereâs a complete list.
30" 5: Form Factor Audio Wombat FJS5
30" 4 fretless: Marco MarcĂșstico (due 25 Feb 2025), Sire U5
30" 4: Höfner Green Line 500/1, LÄkland Skyline HB30, Reverend Wattplower Mark II, Ernie Ball Music Man Tim Commerford passive Stingray #23 of 50, Sire U5, Ibanez EHB1000S, G&L Fullerton Deluxe Fallout, Schecter Banshee, Gibson SG
27" 4: Valiant Mini Bass
17" 4 and 5: Mayones Cali 4 and Cali 5
Amps: GR Bass AT Cube 500 combo and AT Cube 112 cab, Fender Rumble Studio 40 combo
Many thanks to Josh for his Beginner to Badass course that got me going again after a 40 year interruption for the Army, university and career!
Nice collection!!
also⊠Welcome to the forums!
Thanks! I worked through the B2B course a few years ago. Iâm on TalkBass every day. No idea why it took me so long to find my way here.
What a collection. Love it. Welcome to the forum.
Iâd be curious to hear how you like these. I think these are fantastically well made instruments, but I couldnât gel with them at all - it all felt very wrong for me; I didnât even know how to hold them really, or fret properly
I guess if you are experienced with stringed instruments, it might be OK, but I learned my lesson and need to stick with full size basses for now.
Nice collection there otherwise - congrats!
Yeah! 100% with you!
Piggyback with his questions what kind of strings are those? I assume thatâs itâs a standard tuning one octave up.
They are now using their own strings designed specifically for the Cali basses. Gauges are: .030, .045, .065, .085. The B string on the 5 is .105. The 4-string set is available from Mayones online store. The 5-string set is so new, that itâs not in their store yet. They were very kind and included a spare set of string for the 4 and the 5.
You are correct. They are tuned up one octave, the open strings being equivalent to the 12th fret on a standard bass. See my reply to @joergkutter for more info.
I had several reasons for buying them.
-
I have an incurable GAS problem when it comes to shorty and sub-shorty basses.
-
Mayones doesnât make a 30" scale bass that I know of, and I have been drooling over Mayones basses since seeing Ellen (EllenPlaysBass) got one and plays it regularly in her videos. I plan on asking their sales manager if they can make one for me.
-
I want to play them through Jam Originâs MIDIGuitar 3 (still in beta). Even if MIDIBass 2 (not released yet) adds polyphony support, tracking below E2 is difficult and I donât play 6ers (too many strings too close together
).

Did I mention GAS?
Hereâs Ellen with her Mayones (they also sent her a Cali 4). The guitarist is also playing a Mayones.
Yep, Mayones has made two Commodus Custom short scales for Ellen.
Check out this video at starting at 4:51, where Ellen plays a Victor Wooten(!) line on her first Mayones shorty.
I believe Mayones will make a short scale as a custom build order.
Totally legit reasons to buy!
Now, the question remains: how do you like them??
I just unboxed them on Xmas Day. Time will tell.
Right you are @MikeC ! I donât know how I missed it, but they now have a custom Comodous 4 short scale page up, so itâs a product I can order without jumping through a bunch of hoops. Maybe they put it up after making Ellenâs 2 shorties. Woo hoo.
