Show Us Your Basses (Part 2)

Love the grains, the binding, and the block inlays. Nice!!!

To celebrate slowly getting back into bass playing after a bit of a hiatus, I wanted to “upgrade” my BB234. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, but generally speaking, I like customizing my stuff and making them more “mine”. So here it is:

I changed the stock chrome knobs and put on black Gotoh VK3 ones, then also switched out the stock chrome bridge for a black Gotoh 201B-4. I wanted to also change the tuners and install the Gotoh FB30 ones in black, for that absolute B&W look. However, to install those I’d have to drill new holes in the headstock and I’m too chicken to do that, I’m not great with handy stuff…
Also, strung it with the Olinto 47-107 and those sound great! Will give it a few days to settle for the different tension and then give it a setup, poor thing hasn’t had one since last April when I kind of stopped playing…

Good Lord that thing is beautiful. I def agree on the black tuners that would make the whole bass look even better. Maybe give it some time and work up the nerve, it’s actually pretty easy. Very very nice job though:+1:

Thanks! I think I’ll give it some time and then take the plunge and get the tuners after I finish the course for the second time through. Sort of a graduation present!

Looks good! I just did an upgrade on my BB234 a couple months ago. Swapped pickups to DiMarzio Model P/J, put on black knobs, and installed a Hipshot Badass bridge in black, and added a Hipshot 3-string retainer in black. I also stopped at tuners because I’m nervous about drilling but I really want to install black tuners and have a bass xtender for my E string

Sounds awesome! I’ve been thinking about pickups too but the possibilities are endless and I feel like I’m getting choice paralysis haha. Was looking at getting the DiMarzio Split P and Ultra Jazz, but frankly, even with the current pickups and some EQ, the tonal options are great

Yeah the BB sounds good on its own and I still have the original pickups that came with it but the DiMarzios sound incredible and I’m really happy with the upgrade

Awesome! Maybe I should really add the pickups to my graduation gift list then

Yeah actually I really like the P pickup on the 234, it’s a nice strong ceramic P. Nothing wrong with it. It’s different than the 434 and 734a too, which is actually cool IMO.

If you do upgrade it, going with a DiMarzio Model P (another favorite of mine, good punchy ceramic pickup too) will keep the tone similar and maybe slightly better.

The J - that might be a good upgrade.

Hi there!

At the start of my bass journey, this is my contemporary Hofner with upgrades (German electronics, tailpiece, and tuners) and a pickup mount to look like Paul’s.

That is lovely! And the 5 stands for five string! You’re a braver man than I am lol, my fingers struggle enough with 4 :joy:

I went back and forth between whether I should buy a 4 or a 5, but I knew ultimately I’d want a 5 for some of the things I would love to learn to play. I am also fairly familiar with six strings on a guitar - so I chose the 5 string. That said, I went to a music store today to look at tuners and things and almost walked out with a 4 string. Chances are I can’t resist if it is still there next month. Thankfully it is only 1/3rd the cost of that Schecter.

I just started playing, I’ve just made it to module 6. I bought a Sire V5 jazz (found a b-stock at thomann) for a great price. Super happy with it!

I know the gsr200 has a Marmite reputation, but I love the rumbly growls it makes and so far it has been brilliant to learn on and play about with.:black_heart:

I figured it was time to get these on here and show some love to my fellow lefties. In January it had been 34 years since I last picked up a bass so thought these two were a good place to start considering I wasn’t sure if I would be taking it seriously. Then I started B2B and I’m already planing more purchases. I blame @howard
